If Tubby was out after three NCAA appearances and a tournament win, Richard Pitino can’t expect to be safe if he fails to make the Big Dance this year. Pitino is 1 for 5 in making the NCAA Tournament at the U of M. Many people inside the industry think he can’t afford to go 1 for 6.

After a Sunday loss to Rutgers, however, the bubble squeeze is being felt by Richard Pitino. Rick’s son has a team with a deteriorating resume which is indisputably on the bubble. The Gophers are probably on the good side of the bubble, but the bigger point of emphasis is that they are closer to the middle of the bubble than on the outside fringe.

The good news, however, is that in the loaded Big Ten, Minnesota will get more bites at the apple. The Gophers will get more chances to substantially improve their profile and — if not escape the bubble entirely — move to the top edge of it, where it would become very difficult to miss the Big Dance.

If Minnesota can simply beat Northwestern and then defeat either Purdue or Maryland in the coming weeks, it should be okay… but while that is hardly impossible, it is also not a piece of cake.

Purdue is at home, Maryland on the road. The Maryland game will probably be harder to win. Purdue at home, for an NCAA bid? That might be what the Gophers are looking at. This is simultaneously very doable yet not comfortable at all.

It is up to Richard to apply some of his dad’s most essential teachings about pressure:

“At Kentucky, I learned all about pressure every single day,” Rick Pitino once said. “It was unbelievable pressure and it was very difficult and that pressure brought out the best in everybody.”

“Sure, there’s pressure, but we try to make it a good pressure. We try to use it to inspire us to jump higher or run faster or shoot better.”

Richard Pitino KNOWS what his dad teaches. He knows how Rick became one of the game’s greatest coaches (say whatever else you want about the man’s enormous failings and misdeeds off the court).

Yet, there is a difference between knowing and applying, between the mere possession of knowledge and the act of conveying it in ways which transform players.

This is what Richard Pitino must do in the coming weeks, especially in that home game against Purdue, which could become the make-or-break moment for his Minnesota tenure.

Where did all the time go? It could soon be time for Richard Pitino to go… if he can’t beat Purdue or Maryland in the next few weeks.
