To me this looks like a case of a coach not realizing the PR hit his decision was going to cause. He didn't pull the offer he just defelayed it but the kid doesn't want to wait and clearly he is high profile enough that his complaining is going to have a negative impact on Kiffin and the school. I would be willing to bet this kind of stuff happens more than people realize but with his reputation anything Kiffen does is immediately going to blow up on him since for obvious reasons most people (myself included) think the guy is jerk. This story would be far worse if he had pulled the offer completely. As I read it though it just says the kid can't enroll on scholarship in January but instead has to wait 5 months and come to school with the rest of the freshman class.

On the bright side the more crap that happens to USC the better even if in this case I don't think it is quite as damning as some of the other crap he has pulled over the years.

I've been seeing lots of references to this on the SBN sites, and I don't understand all the fuss. Kids flip back and forth all the time (often on or just before signing day, not a month before), and now all of the sudden Kiffin is a d0uche for doing the same thing in reverse? And, as MNVC points out, he didn't even pull the offer, he just asked him to wait until August rather than January to enroll. BFD. It's also not fair for them to talk ish about Kiffin, because the kids can say whatever they want about anyone (including the player's dad in this case running Kiffin through the mud), but when a kid flips to a different school, the school is prohibited by rule from even saying anything.

Lane Kiffin is a clown, however this isn't as much as a "Kiffin is a dirtbag" moment as it seems.

Apparently one of the USC RS seniors was supposed to graduate after fall semester but did not.

His scholarship is good for the academic year so Kiffin had to bump one of the early enrollees because they can not exceed the hard cap because of sanctions.

Apparently Fitts is questionable for the spring because of a wrist injury, Kiffin just weighed the options as best he could.

Figured it would be better to have 3DBs, a QB in Browne that some people are saying might push Wittek for the starting job, and a stud RB instead of Fitts for spring ball.

USC's AD Pat Haden is keeping Kiffin on because he is a good recruiter, plain and simple. Haden didn't hire Kiffin and he wants the cabinet to be stocked when he eventually fires Kiffin and brings in his own guy.

If this is the entire story, then Lane Kiffen should have articulated loudly and clearly to Fitts, to his parents/family, to his high school coaching staff and athletic director, and to everyone else who would listen, that this offer for early enrollment at USC was entirely conditional on a 5th year guy moving on.

Given Kiffen's propensity to lie, cheat, etc. etc. and his ridiculous accumulation of baggage over the years, I believe what I want to believe, and that is Kiffen is continuing to do the only thing he knows how to do...lie, cheat, have the footballs deflated, lie some more, cheat some more, etc.

I know for a fact Haden has had about enough.

Monte must be so ashamed of his son.

And Kiffin just found out in the middle of January?

I don't think it's a huge deal either, but when you've done stupid stuff like he has in the past, people are going to be more critical of you.

As to dpodoll68's point about players flipping back and forth all the time, I understand your point. But that player is pretty much called a d0uche by the fans of the team he screwed over afterwards. It happens here all the time. And just because players do it doesn't mean it's okay for a coach to do it. Recruits are making a huge decision that will affect the rest of their lives. The coach, not so much.

And Kiffin just found out in the middle of January?

I worked in the registrar's office at CSB/SJU and it takes a while to do degree audits. Plus, final grades aren't usually posted until sometime early January. USC is how many times bigger than CSB/SJU, so I don't doubt he just found out.

I still think it is silly though that an overlap of 1 semester where a 5th year senior, who is done playing football, can't complete his degree and prevents a high school senior from enrolling.

The irony is that Kiffin & staff probably thought at the beginning of the season that they'd have more juniors leaving from a 14-0 or 13-1 team :)
