Yes, ok...This team has had to face a little more than just "some" adversity this basketball season, but I still do not think that this team should be slumping as bad as they are.

Sure, you can make a case that this team has been very unlucky, but in the games that we have won, besides Indiana, Iowa, OSU, Wisky, we have let the opposing team have every chance in the world to get back into the game and beat us!

Poor play down the strech has been the achilles heal for this team all season long. You would think that at the end of the regular season this team would be over that obstacle by now. Everytime I have watched a game this season I haven't felt comfortable about any of are leads. I'm sure most of would say that a team is never "dead" no matter what the score is when they play the gophers after watching the Illini disaster. Granted we did win, but come on 19 point lead with 7 minutes to go...and we only win by a mere 2 points!

Another point of emphasis is this teams streakiness. 14 points given up at half time in Illinois! Impressive! Then Michigan a team who is the worst shooting team in the conference from 3's puts up 7 against us in the first half and scores 43 points! This outburst of scoring coming just one game after our spectacular showing of D against Illini. Once again this has been a re-occuring theme for this team throughout the season. The probablility that this team will come out flat, and play lazy D on the road is about 2:1. I see this happen about everytime on the road. There have only been a few game against big teams this season that we have played solid D on the road. You would think by now that this team would learn from the game film and figure out how to stop guys like Sims. Round 1 was a failure, and round 2 was an epic failure. The sound of that Michigan P.A's voice saying Deshawn Sims! everytime he made a basket is still stuck in my head to this moment. It's pathetic let me tell you!

Finally, this team always seems to be a very streaky shooting club. Playing on the road is like trudging through the jungles of Vietnam for this team. My point being that they are always way to afraid to make a mistake. Sometimes baskets don't come when a team is being cautious and looking for the best possible shot. Sometimes you gotta mix things up a bit. They gotta get a little bit flashy!

Teams like PSU, and Michigan seem to have improved their game over the last month or so. I don't see how we can't be like that. Were young, our boys have talent! Why couldn't they put a better showing on the court this season. This is virtually the same team that made the NCAA's and knocked off a Louisville team who was a 1 seed in the regular season. I don't see the same fire from this team at all like I did last season. Sure last season they fell off the map, but that's only because we were young, and we probably got ahead of ourselves a bit. But hey, we still made the dance!

Losing Nolan hurts, and i know Devoe isn't a true PG, but where is this teams heart? The players don't seem to gell at all! We just need to find ourselves again That's the answer everyone is looking for.

Maybe its just me but where is the hustle plays? Is it just me or are players this season just not getting after the ball as much as the previous years. I dont recall one person diving for the ball if it was loose on the ground unlike in tubbys first couple years players would dive after the ball if it was on the ground.

Yes and that is not "Tubby Smith basketball." When I watched the Michigan game it seemed like they got to about 80 percent of the loose balls. We are more athletic than Michigan as a whole. Harris may be the most athletic player in the conference behind Evan Turner. They played with no heart for some ungodly reason.

By athletic do you mean best? Because as far as sheer athleticism goes Turner doesn't even have the most on his team.

Nowadays players improve a lot less at the collegiate level than they used to. 20 years ago many kids only played basketball in the winter for their high school club.

Now, 99% of the D-1 level kids play basketball year round starting at a younger age. Traveling teams, AAU, Howard Pulley, etc. The high school season is just part of the process.

You don't see as much improvement anymore. Kids are ready for the college game right out of H.S. Carmello Anthony, Kevin Durant, Greg Oden, John Wall, etc. Freshman are supposed to make an immediate impact - because they are ready for the competition. Even if they aren't lottery picks, players don't improve as much. You might see a small jump between freshman and sophomore year, but that is mostly due to playing time, IMO.

Few HS players are like Anthony, Durant, et al. Less than 1% of them.

Many players DO improve over their college careers even if highly touted HS players.

WRONG

Rebounds

They dont go after rebounds with the intensity needed either. We need some new blood.

I would argue from the Wisconsin game through the Illinois game, we were playing some of the best ball we've played under Tubby. I definitely saw the improvement. They were playing inspired, competing, making plays.

Then Michigan happened. It's unexplainable really.

Doc,

>>We need some new blood.<<

Blood might help; muscle would definitely help. IMO, we're playing a 4 at 5 and a 3 at 4 most of the time. (Not to mention a 2 at 1.)

I think we need to see if the Michigan game was indeed reality or a blip before we say that the Gophers haven't improved. Because, there was no doubt that we had pieced together our best five-game stretch of the season (against quality competition) right before that. We easily could have been 5-0 in that stretch. We had a late double digit lead at NW, we beat Indiana and Wisconsin, should have beaten PU, and won at Illinois.

I know we lost two of those games, but we played good basketball in all five. So, to say we aren't or weren't improving is just not true, IMO.

We now have to figure out if the Michigan game was simply a clunker for whatever reason or whether we did indeed regress for whatever reason.

My prediction is we'll thump Iowa by big double digits. Hope so, anyway.

they are missing a true point guard, a consistent scorer and a big body rebounder. Tubby had those playes with TM,RW,and AN......Overall, the Gophers have a very good surrounding cast of players and should feel good about next year with the return of TM,RW and AN. I for one am not going to miss westbrook and would not be surprised if cobbs or CI would transfer. Iverson should have had a redshirt season and maybe his confidence would not be soo low. I am not sure what to do with Hoff---yes he can shoot but he needs to be able to get open. I am not sure what he can do to improve himself in that department.

Iverson playing better lately. Cobbs will be much improved as sophomore.

Agree completely! This team has no balance. We don't have the muscle at the 4 and 5. We have a 3 that can't consistently score. At the 2 position Westbrook is our best scorer, but he is to short and a poor ball handler. Finally, we were short handed at PG even before we lost Nolen. Therefore, Devoe really hasn't had a chance to learn the 2 spot.

If we had had White and Mbakwe most of these problems disappear.
