Safe play
When Ryan Santoso converted a career-long 52 yard field goal to give the Gophers a 39-38 lead, the Boilermakers didn't offer a rush.

"We had safe on. We thought he was going to fake it," coach Darrell Hazell said
.

Minnesota coach Jerry Kill didn't hesitate sending out Santoso, who missed an extra point after the third touchdown.

"I was worried about getting the snap and the hold," Kill said. "We figured if we could get him to around the 35-yard line, he had a chance to get it."..

Airing it out
Quarterback Mitch Leidner threw for only 22 yards on 4-of-9 passing in the first half. Minnesota, though, needed his arm in the second half.

Leidner completed 5 of 9 passes for 143 yards, including a 37-yard score to KJ Maye to bring the Gophers within 38-36 with 1:13 left in the third quarter. Minnesota's success in the running game set up the pass after halftime.

"We started bringing a little bit more pressure in the second half than we did in the first half," Hazell said. "We were trying to penetrate and slant the front and angle the front and they were cutting us off in the first half."

The Gophers' receivers were able to get behind the secondary too many times in the second half.

"They have some pretty good receivers," safety Taylor Richards said. "We've got to have better discipline all around the board. Obviously, that's what we're lacking right now. To be a good defense, discipline is the key."..

- David Cobb's 194 rushing yards are the most against the Boilermakers this season.

I've always thought we've had pretty good receivers too! Just needed a few more opportunities and a little better pass protection. Kinda fun to see how an extra second or too in the pocket can make a passing game look better!!

Seriously? Really? HE said that?

I think we have good WR's... just not a QB who consistently puts it where they can get it...

I was referring to the guy saying they have to be more disciplined. Pretty sure HE had the big penalty to keep the drive alive for the winning field goal.

He was and that's what he was referring to. He was quoted about it after the game. Said he shouldn't have taken the penalty.

Here's the quote:

Minnesota had third-and-5 from its own 35 and quarterback Mitch Leidner's pass was incomplete. However, safety Taylor Richards was called for a personal foul — on the other side of the field."It's a penalty. I ran into the guy, I touched him. I guess I hit him a little bit too hard and got the flag," said Richards, who finished with 10 tackles.

Once we start a year with a QB with more than 7 games experience i think the passing game will thrive. We have built a strong Line and continue to do so expect that the QB will be better as we go along. even Strevler will be better gaining a little experience this season.

think about next year and the non conference with a healthy Mitch with all these games behind him. hopefully he gets to rest most of 2nd halves in the non conference games next year

the WR's will get their chance next year with a QB and OL that has some experience and will help the overall package of this offense

I figured they thought it was going to be a fake. They hardly rushed at all on the long FG.

That kick would have been good from 57. It was high and down the middle. It landed in Band.
