'Q One of the biggest stories this spring is the quarterback competition. Can you update us on how that's going?

A They are really into it, they like coming to practice and meetings. Adam (Weber) has played a lot of football. I like where he's at. Right now we're trying to fine-tune him, help him get back to the kind of player he can be. MarQueis (Gray) is making steps, getting better. It's a challenge for him, because he was a spread guy. He wasn't used to being under center. But I see signs every day that he'll be a good quarterback. Moses (Alipate) has been impressive. He has good footwork and a cannon for an arm.'

THIS surprises me a bit. While I like Adam Weber, I've been hoping MarQueis Gray has improved enough to take over the QB job this year. This conversation doesn't seem to imply that that is the case.

It's also interesting to hear that Horton is so high on Alipate. It's going to be an exciting spring game.

I don't think it implied anything, did you skip over the part about Weber needing fine-tuning? Don't write off MarQueis just yet.

mkAz--You are correct. I should have clarified I meant at this time.

The depth at QB is something we haven't had for a long time. I liked Fisch but Horton has more experience and he won't be running off if we have a good year.

I interpret this line about Weber, "Right now we're trying to fine-tune him, help him get back to the kind of player he can be.", as implying that Fisch had Weber screwed up. I have always suspected that last years system was more more of a problem then anyone's admitted. The spring game will be a revelation.

That's why Pete Caroll wanted to hire him?, don't you think the problem had more to do with Weber(who is not NFL caliber) than an NFL coach?

No, and blaming it on Weber's lack of NFL potential is a complete cop-out. It had to do with bringing an NFL system into a college program and introducing it to a kid who has a class schedule to worry about along with the fact that he's worked his ass off under three different offensive coordinators in four years (four in five if you include his redshirt year under Mason). Remember our offensive line performance and that situation where our wide receivers coach moved on this summer, as well? How quickly we forget that there is more to the story than the mistakes of one person.

Adam Weber has gone through more b.s. than any of his peers at qb across the college landscape have had to go through from an adjustment standpoint, and I hope he continues to handle business the way he has, because I feel really bad about the unnecessary beating he takes with regularity from some posters on this board who have absolutely no perspective.

+1

I'm glad Kent could take time out of his tremendously strenuous schedule of breaking down film and interviewing coaches and players to put together this five question interview. At least there was a little insight offered.

And bankonit, I wouldn't use Pete as a measuring stick. He's not exactly an NFL coaching legend based on his previous stint, and I don't expect him to succeed this time. It's going to be quite a rude awakening when he realizes he can't outspend the competition because of the salary cap.

Thank you. I have tried to make this point before. He takes way too much criticism and is incredibly underappreciated.

The Gophers play college football.

I know that I am not alone on this: last year, Adam Weber drove me crazy on many occasions. Quite a few times I yelled to my TV set, get Gray in there! But, I'm going out on a limb and predicting that Adam Weber is going to have a good senior year. I think Horton is going to make a big difference in Adam's form and confidence. I'm hoping it will be a situation similar to Pitt Panthers QB last year, Bill Stull. He had a terrible junior season and most fans did not want him to start in his senior season. Stull had a solid last year. Let's face it, if Weber has a great year, this team could surprise a lot of people.

Please prove me right Adam!!!

I have to think this is part of it. Remember that the pro's practice and watch video each day in preparation for next weeks game. They have many more hours available for football than a college kid has and have years of experience under a specific system. I have to think it impacted the offensive line as well as the quarterback.
