After a season of liquor sales at TCF Bank Stadium, a state lawmaker wants to also allow hockey and basketball fans at the University of Minnesota to buy beer and wine.

Rep. Dan Schoen, DFL-St. Paul Park, introduced a bill Thursday, Feb. 21, that would extend alcohol sales to Mariucci and Williams arenas.

The Legislature passed a bill allowing alcohol sales at the Gopher's football stadium last year. Schoen says the football game alcohol sales proved "Armageddon did not happen" and booze could be monitored.

Currently, only fans in premium seating can buy alcohol at the arenas where the school's hockey and basketball teams play.

The university pulled in more than $900,000 in liquor sales from seven home football games last season. The profits went to the university's athletic department.

Go Gophers!!

Mens football, hockey and basketball sounds great. Why not women's sports?

I think it would be a really neat idea if they let the U run their own business.

Tubby Buy-Out Beer? It's worth the U considering, but this bill is a bad idea. They will probably just stop selling in the suites again, which would have the opposite effect. MYOB MN Legislature.

Don't the legislators have something better to do?

Oh good. More drunk people at the games.

Wrong, CP. The fans are ok at the games. All the drunks are here on GH during the Live Game Threads. Just ask GH Admin as they monitor them.

Maybe beer sales will help inject a little life into the two arenas.

I think this is an omen that they maybe thinking about keeping Tubby. I fear that they think watching his offense can only be enjoyable while under the influence.

Did Norwood and Ellis come to this realization while plowed at the OSU game? I sure hope so.

Intoxicated Alums at the Barn during a Tubby Team Collapse? Could it happen?

STrib: Expand beer, wine to more U of M arenas, legislator says

“Beer for all worked pretty well at the Bank,” he told fellow legislators on the House commerce committee on Tuesday night. “I think beer for all could work pretty well at the rest of the stadiums, too.”

Not so fast, say university officials. “We do have a couple of concerns,” said university lobbyist Todd Iverson. The university, he said, would like to wait to study how alcohol affects the games at the stadium before expanding to other venues. “This isn’t saying we’re opposed to the bill, but we have concerns about it being implemented this year.”

"Beer sales have been brisk at the stadium, Iverson conceded, with an estimated $990,000 in sales in the first season alone. But only about $16,000 in profits ended up in the university’s pocket, he said."

How many six-figure U administrators and what sort of consultant fee would be used to "study" the effects of beer at Williams Arena?

I'd like to know who negotiated the deal where the U only got $16K on a gross of $990K. If you're going to be flaunting beer as new revenue stream, you better get more than 1.6% of the gross out of the deal.

This is what we're fighting about?!?!?!? $16 k in profits?!?!? This is what the U sold its soul for!?!?!?!? For the equivalent of one person working a full-time job making $8 an hour?!?!?!? You've got be f*cking kidding me!!!! Am I being punked??? Is this real life?!?!?

I'm with dpodoll here. That 16,000 better be a typo. Those are some abysmal margins.

I’d like an explanation of that number. In addition, did the University realize an increase in preferred seating revenue based on the ability to sell alcohol in those areas? If so, how much?

I am sure that selling alcohol resulted in significant increases in security related expenses. Perhaps that can be scaled back some since it sounds like there were far fewer problems than anticipated. I have no objection to the University having over-budgeted for security the first year since that’s much better than the alternative, but if that’s the case some re-calculation should occur in year 2. On the other hand, the home schedule features Iowa, Nebraska and Wisconsin this fall, so I am sure that they want to be prepared for the riot after they run out of beer in the second quarter.

Were they selling it for $1 glass? Was the Maturi buyout fund an overhead cost? That $ can't be right or someone should get fired.

privatize the beer sales-- I hereby offer them $20,000 (25% increase over their profits) for the rights to sell beer at TCF.
