I suspect that Alabama has figured out that band members and band supporters end up becoming rabid boosters and likely have fairly high earning potentials. Got to spend money to make money- something that (unfortunately) the U has never figured out.

yes, Nils guessed that college athletics were of little value.

Is a college education from Alabama the equivalent of one from NHCC?

Cuz they spend all their money on athletics/activities, not academics.

I suspect with the national championships they probably don't need to spend money to make money so much as ... they're just rolling in donations.

just resurfaced turf and paint on an old field. i think bryant-denny stadium is still grass and with the stadium structure upgrades they have a hard time maintaining the turf, so the band needs to practice on their own field. they replace the sod and turf every year at bryant-denny because of the difficlty maintaining the field

Not trying to hate but I'm sure there's plenty of open land in Tuscaloosa. Not that expensive to chalk a FB field or use crappy turf. The cost is in the surrounding stadiums. Every high school within 30 mns of me has fields that look like that

So, how long were you part of the band?

That was my first thought as well ... it is a small piece of land, the size of a football field, in a small town. I'm sure it's nice for them to have their own practice field, but by no means is this a big deal, IMO.

I actually think The U band has a better setup. Having the band indoor rehearsal space, locker room, and storage inside a brand new stadium is pretty cool.

Michigan's band has their own turf practice field.

This is a big deal. Before TCF, the U band didn't practice on a field at all...it was an abandoned parking lot behind the track. Great to see money going to the arts.

Wait, do most universities not have their own band practice field?

Oh, to be an alumnus of a helmet school. :)

As mentioned, before TCF, the Gopher band practiced in an old parking lot wedged between the track & new softball field. It had old Metrodome turf at one point. But it started to gape at the seems, turning many marching ankles. The asphalt was actually an upgrade. Also, there must have been a huge bee hive nearby.

To bad they waste it on the band.

What a lame, misguided comment. These are very busy, very dedicated, very good students who go on to be very good boosters. News for you buddy, nerds run the world of commerce.
