There's certainly some nice names floating around our job, some realistic, some not. But part of the reason is that Minnesota is the only job open right now. That will soon not be the case. Colorado will open as soon as this week. Michigan, Maryland, Washington State and possibly Penn State will follow. While we are not competing with Michigan or Penn State (for the most part) their hire may create an opening somewhere we would compete with. Bottom-line is that we will soon go from the only fish in the pond to a small fish in a full pond.

Of the currently unemployed coaches, Mike Bellotti is by far the best fit, IMO. With regards to Bellotti specifically, he's already been linked to Washington State, which employs his former boss as AD and Colorado. Both would enable him to stay in the Pac 10. However, if we were to move aggressively now, we could probably sign him up before those jobs have a chance.

I understand this would mean passing up the opportunity to take a run at guys like Richt, Sumlin, etc. But personally, I'd rather jump on a highly qualified candidate while we have the chance, then roll the dice on getting someone better after the season. The only issue I see is the PR issue of not being able to interview enough candidates, specifically minorities, etc. But they may or may not have already interviewed Trestman, they can find 1-2 others (Frazier?) to make sure nothing appears improper. Further, I doubt they sincerely interviewed anyone else when they hired Tubby, so there is precedent.

Yes. If Bellotti would accept the job tomorrow, I'd say give it to him and get him started.

Bellotti or Leach work for me. Although, I think the earlier we would probably see someone hired is December 5th. I could be wrong though, just my take.

No, I'll take the best candidate period. The "U" can't get this one wrong and taking Bellotti now for any reason other than they believe he's the best candidate is settling. I don't think it matters if PSU/Michigan open up as they will be looking at different candidates (PSU likely internal promotion).

Right now I'd take anybody who wants the job, who has a proven track record of success in building something from underground up and is willing to set reasonable but winning expectations.

I'd love to get someone in before the end of the season. I firmly believe though that the person we get isn't even on the tip of anybody's tongue. I mean who ever thought we would get Tubby Smith when we were looking for a BB coach. He came out of nowhere. I think the same will happen for the FB coach.

I would say if he is the guy we want, we should hire him right away. But I wouldn't have him officially start until after the Iowa game. Getting him in right now doesn't do much good in my opinion. He's not going to change anything. The coaching staff is not his. Let him start with a clean slate.

actually North Texas St fired their HC a few days after Brew and that job is starting to look less humiliating than MN

did we really interview trestman? if so then that shows maturi is an idiot...

MV of the FBT blog said that the guy was "full of crap". The guys who said Trestman interviewed on Twitter replied to MV saying, "My tweet was not full of crap. Trestman did not fly w/team yesterday. Came directly to Mpls, met with Maturi today." I still don't believe it.

Nice job changing this into a "Maturi is an idiot" thread.

I'm just saying. Maturi is talking out of his ass about the next hire & then to even go interview someone who is the complete opposite of what he's claimed his criteria is for the next coach shows what he *WOULD* settle for. If Maturi was smart he would only interview College HC's & at worst Coordinators but to start off with an unproven CFL Coach who was a disaster in his stint at the college level which was nearly 2 decades ago show how much effort Maturi is really putting into this, feel me?

I really hope it's not true. I'd rather the U hire a proven coach & fail...at least that way we can appreciate that they at least went after a winning coach. But I don't think fans can stomach another experiment if it ends up in another Brewsterlike scenario...

Maturi should be able to find out through the back channels whether Harbaugh, Richt or other high-profile current coaches would be interested. If they are legitimately interested then let's wait it out. If they aren't then I'd definitely go for Bellotti if I felt he was a candidate for Colorado or Wash State (he won't be a candidate for Mich, PSU or Maryland IMHO)

He could start recruiting tomorrow. If they know who they want and they can get him, the sooner the better, whether that's Belotti or not. (And I hope it's Belotti.)

I'm not thinking of it from a standpoint of coaching the last 3 games. I think you let Horton do that regardless. It's more about getting him locked up before opportunities in the Pac 10 come calling. And giving him an extra 3-4 weeks to get his staff assembled and start recruiting would obviously be a good thing.

I understand wanting to get the best candidate regardless. But the reality is there isn't 'one guy' and waiting until December in the hopes of getting Richt/Harbough only to end up with Trestman would be a disaster. Especially if we could simply have been proactive and taken a proven winner now.

If the Gophers hire a bowl bound coach, he needs to forget about the bowl game and get started coaching the Gophers right away. This team needs to get a good staff and recruiting class, and waiting until January to start doing isn't the way to do it.

Bellotti is my number one choice of guys who could start tomorrow. Bellotti and Golden are my #1 and #1A in no particular order.
