Would this be an even trade?

The axe for the pig and jug?

I'll always take 2 wins over 1 in this trio, but it is so long overdue for us to beat UW. 11 straight loses is very frustrating. Our program needs this win, and it would be huge for Claeys and heading into the off-season (realizing we still could have a bowl game, but the momentum of beating UW will have some staying power).

Go Gophers!!

Wouldn't call it an even trade but as Bleed said it is way overdue to beat Wisconsin. These last two are very winnable if the offense keeps playing the way it has been and the defense gets some things shored up (never thought I would type that line this year). If we make a bowl game this year it needs to be "earned" with 6 wins and not backed into with 5 on the basis of there being too many bowl games and not enough teams.

I was talking to a friend the other day, and we were discussing this very subject. This has been a very tough year in comparison to the last couple (the losses, the injuries, Kill, etc...) but we agreed that everything would be forgotten if we can get the Axe. Programs at our level are going to go through seasons like this...actually if this represents a 'low point' we're looking pretty good. Get the Axe and I'll probably still look back on this season with a slight smile.

No way - I'd almost never trade 2 wins for 1, unless that 1 win is for a championship of some sort.

Why? Needs to be "earned"?

Yes, I really hope they win the next two and I actually think they will and there won't be anything to worry about.

But making a bowl game is critical and I'll take it any way they can get it. The importance of that extra month of practice (not to mention a little more tv exposure) cannot be overstated. Those 15 (I think?) extra practices are just plain huge for a blossoming program like this one.

5-7 and headed to a bowl won't be pretty but I'll absolutely take it. I believe I heard on the radio the other day that one of the deciding factors between the 5-7 teams is academics which I would think would bode well for the Gophers right now.

Win the last two. Period. And I think they will

Agree with this on what's best for the team, but from a more existential point of view the Axe is worth more to me in rivalry cred than Floyd and the Jug combined.

No, but since the Axe is the only one still up for grabs, we need a new coach to prove that he can coach a team that can win the Axe.
We have had two coaches since the last win, time to put a stop to that streak.

I will usually pull for more wins, but not in this scenario. The only trophy I want more than The Axe is the National Championship trophy. If it means we lose the pig and jug, so be it. Of course I'd rather keep them all, but the Axe tops my list of trophies we play for. I'm sick and tired of hearing about how wisco has the Axe and about the streak.

I agree only now it might be more of "beggars can't be choosey." Been telling a couple of guys since summer that this is the year the Gophers beat Bucky. Weird now that I think it even more that it will happen. However, there is a game before that everybody better concentrate on.

Get the Axe and I'll be one happy camper!

An optimal year ends with us holding the pig, the jug & the axe.

A good year ends with us holding 2 of the 3.

An acceptable year ends with us holding 1 of the 3.

An unacceptable year ends with us going zero for three in trophy games.

This will be an unacceptable year.

Since the JUG is in Ann Arbor for the winter and the PIG is in Iowa City, damn right I will happily take the AXE. Beat the stinking badger, Gopher...ri

I am becoming very specifically focused on the axe. The unacceptably long losing streak has to end, and I have pretty much decided I will be upset with the team with any season that doesn't end the losing streak unless they manage to win the division. Winning the axe would go a long way towards making me less upset about this year.

Have you told the team your views on this?
