I haven't seen any comments from Leidner or Johnson regarding the Iowa game. Hope to hear something today? I know they wouldn't let Leidner talk after the Iowa game. Would like to hear from them why we had the worst offensive performance in 4 years. Would be nice to hear what they have to say.

I'm not a fan of putting the kids / players in the spotlight like that, they can't really say much.

OC, would be nice to hear from although there's not much that would make me feel better other than to see some semblance of performance / sensemaking on the field.

4 years? I think you have forgotten about the Northwestern and Kent St games from last year.

Rumor has it Mitch will not play at MD.

I'm guessing you just started this rumor with your post. It would be interesting to see who they started tho, if it wasn't ML7. Maybe that QB will hand the ball off to Brooks.

Look at my other thread. They just released the Position Chart.

Leidner appears to be off the depth chart for Maryland.

Claeys pretty much summed it up with the offensive line playing like garbage and getting dominated all game (paraphrasing some). Not really sure what else Jay or Mitch could add. No secret that Mitch had a terrible game and the offense in general looked brutal. That said the offense had looked much better in the first 4 games so it could just be a case where they had a really really really really off day. Now if they come out and struggle badly again against Maryland there might be a need for a deeper explanation.

Jay Johnson's dad died unexpectedly 10 days ago. If he's got other things on his mind, and other things he feels like he needs to do, that don't include talking to the media, you have to have a pretty cold heart not to understand.

It's awful and I can speak from firsthand experience that losing a parent is a terrible thing. But if he can't do his job, he needs to step down/step away until he can perform his job at full capacity. Things happen in everyone's life but it's not an excuse for dereliction of duty, particularly when you're comfortably into six figures.

One would guess he's fulfilling all the core duties of his job when it comes to practice, game planning, etc., and that they probably just excused him from any media obligations, quite understandably in my view. I realize that dealing with the media is within the larger scope of his job, but if you can't cut him some slack here I guess I really don't know what to tell you.

Fair enough...is there any proof anywhere that he he didn't do his job in the week leading up to the game?

I think we're venturing back into the old "play calling" versus "execution" debate. IMHO, give the most creative play-caller in the world junk for talent, and he's not going to turn them into superstars simply through play-calling. Or, take the most boring, unimaginative play-caller in the word, and give him top-flight talent, and they will do just fine.
\
Talent and execution my friends - talent and execution. Gophers played poorly and didn't execute on Saturday. It's fair to question the coaches for not having the players prepared, but they were going to struggle no matter who called the plays. (assuming the same level of performance.)

The lack of playing Brooks certainly is a legit complaint from a playcalling standpoint.

But yeah the players were put in a position to win the Iowa game numerous times and also just didn't do it.

The offensive line couldn't protect Mitch and historically that has led to very bad things. I also agree play calling isn't the be-all and end-all and there is more luck involved than generally acknowledged. However, it's fair to ask why we didn't respond to Mitch's struggles with more bootlegs, run plays, screens, etc. Did Mitch have a dump-off option or was the RB asked to stay in and block? I don't know, I haven't re watched it and I probably won't.

I also think Mitch gets so wound up at times it would be smart from a psychological standpoint to sit him down for a series or two. Just my opinion but he clearly gets outside himself to the degree it hurts the team. To counter that thought...we have at times seen him lead incredible 4th quarter comebacks. We've also seen implosions vs Wisconsin, Northwestern, etc where it didn't get better. But one has to ask why we needed that comeback to begin with. I've been a Mitch supporter but it is a love hate relationship. I'll miss his leadership next year. Good kid.
