This was a highlight of many football fans before the game. Kinda pisses me off it seems not to happen again this fall! Why not? Can't the cops hold off traffic for a lousy 15 minutes for the band to march? Anyone out there know what the deal is?

Hey, that was a legitimate question! Many Gopher football fans are probably wondering about the same question but were too afraid to ask! Hey Schnauzer, answer my question please! Go Gophers!!

Just look at the 30+ threads on the topic

But the real answer is:

Until TCF Bank Stadium was built, the band was headquartered at Northrop Auditorium. The march down University Avenue was the easiest way to get the band from Northrop to Memorial Stadium.

Good god peoples, when will peoples learn not to start these threads again. For the last time ever, they will not march down University Avenue. not going to happen and will not happen for another 20 or more years.

No, its not a legitimate questions because its been asked 1,000 times before and answered 1,000,000 times. Try using the search box to see if there allready has been a thread or 300 on the topic before starting a new one.

No one is afraid to ask, its allready been asked. You really are not very good at the internet.

Oh and the freaking answer is NO

I heard the faint sounds of their band marching to the stadium. The streets were lined with Husker Fans.

Correct....marching TO the stadium FROM their home at the Westbrook Music Building.

The true story that the march down University Avenue was the easiest way to get the band from Northrop to Memorial Stadium is the VERY reason why such a tradition should NEVER be abandoned.

But if they are not at Northrop and already at the stadium where their uniforms, instruments, supplies, etc., already are...what's the easy part about that? Are you willing to drive each of them from the stadium up to the top of University?

Thank you for responses! Walrus, you get the gold medal of the day! I plan to contact some U of M officials to get the band back on University Avenue before games where it should march. Every other school in the Big Ten does it. Why can't we? I rest my case! Go Gophers!

To honor a tradition how many steps are too many? They might learn to LOVE the tradition. They play the same songs as those Marching Bands all those decades past did.

There is a lot to be said for tradition...

AND: do you realize that could make the current Marching Band (which is steeped in tradition with their chants as they march and their Great music and their tradition of turning their hats backwards for post game concerts following a win) ONE STEP HIGHER on the tradition honoring organizations of the University of Minnesota since they would have to start out at the stadium and return to Northrup to HONOR the tradition of Marching down University Ave. to the Stadium. That is the kind of stuff legends are made from and made even stronger with. I could see out state papers and tv stations doing pieces on the GREAT dedication to traditions that the U of M Marching Band has. Who knows? It might even spur on a call to better fund the Band to send them on a B1G Road Trip to show them off to the entire Conference and to fans from all over! Think about it...it could be GREAT for the Band!

It is fun to watch the band at Mariucci circle around the concourse. The band could match out and back from the stadium or just around the stadium.

Thank you froggopher. Fight for the return of tradition to Game Day Saturday!

Words...and posts are merely fleeting flights of fantasy. They come...and...they go. But, keep pounding on the ad, the coach and the people who call to ask you for your money. It's a long-shot...but...getting a new stadium was a long-shot too...

So, are there any former band members who marched back to campus over the Washington Ave Footbridge following that win over wisky in 2001, I think it was? Were you there Zales?

A victory over Wisconsin to avoid finishing 1-7 in the Big Ten in year five of messiah Mason's tenure???? Darn right the band wanted to celebrate.

I really don't care how many times the question has been asked or the question has been discussed. People have been complaining about the lack of pre-game atmosphere at Gopher games. The march down University Avenue when I was on campus was part of what I considered to be a magical tradition. It's something I looked forward to for every home game. It is an important part of the fond memories I have of Gopher football. The fact that the band in now based at TCF Stadium is a matter of logistics, but the march down University Avenue is a matter of tradition and pre-game atmosphere. I think tradition and pre-game atmosphere is more important than logistics. I have a hard time understanding the hostility towards people who want to raise the issue regardless of how many times it has been raised before. Persistence often pays off. And for those of us who greatly valued the University Avenue pre-game March, its probably the only way to keep the issue alive.

Very well stated!

AMEN! I'll keep bringing this marching band issue up until they (U of M brass) maybe think of something similar. Or march down University Avenue like the band used to before games.:clap::clap::clap:

Ugh.

froggopher, what you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone on this board is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.

The North Dakota State football marching band marches to the Fargodome. Perhaps in the future, our band can march to the new Vikings stadium.

"Game Day for the band starts with morning rehearsal at the Fargodome. After morning rehearsal the band has a later call time to be in the band room of the music building. At call, all sections are accounted for and uniforms inspected. The band then goes outside to start the march over. The march over is a seven or so block parade-style march from the music building, through the NDSU campus, up to the Fargodome."

Who cares

I cannot believe how many people on this board bring this up like it is a big issue. The perceived lack of pregame atmosphere is nothing more than a persons perception. I tailgate in a lot east of the stadium. It is not a permit lot, just show and pay $10-$20 depending on the opponent. The lot is full of fans and families tailgating and having a good time. We walk up to the stadium past other tailgating lots and it is a lot of fun interacting with them. I have a good time and the band playing music would provide nothing additional for me. If you are going to the game show up early and create your own fun, don't sit around and complain that the University isn't doing enough for you to have fun. I like the band, but if you want to listen to music go to a concert.

Their point of origin is not the same as their final destination. So logistically, this makes sense. Given all the different requests the Band receives from Athletics (Victory Walk, Tailgate Bands, etc.) in addition to the plaza show, 20-minute pregame show, and morning rehearsal - the band would not be able to fit a parade down University AND find time for a 15 minute break before a 20-minute pregame to hydrate, let alone find time to put their uniforms on.

Victory Walk is asked for by the football team and runs on their time (sometimes they show up 20 minutes early). Busing the band to one end of University is not cost effective as it costs somewhere around $5K alone just to transport the football team from Bierman to the loading docks of Mariucci. Too many variables on campus have changed over the years (mostly due to Memorial Stadium being torn down) to the point where a parade down University no longer makes sense. If Memorial Stadium still stood, and the band still lived in Northrop - then this tradition would most likely continue to live on. Would it look a little different now than it did then? Of course.

TCF is a new chapter for the U and it's alums. Let it evolve into a new experience that you and your children will cherish for the rest of time. Stop living in the past as this is more of an apples to oranges comparison. We are only 4 years into this thing, and traditions take time to establish themselves. There is no doubt the band will be making minor changes to how things work prior to kickoff for years to come. heck they are still pushing to get the Plaza Show on the actual Plaza vs. on the street.

Finally, an actual band member giving us what is really going on.

Well done, Gopherdrummer!!!

One positive of a march down university is that it might wake up the fraternities. Agree with those who say the logistics don't make sense but also think they should try it for Homecoming - at least once.

Regarding making new traditions the only one I can think of - and I am a big fan of it - is unfurling the SKI-U-MAH banner at the beginning of the game. The 3rd quarter hip hop thing (don't know the name of the song / mix) is growing on me. Are there other enduring traditions that have been created?

Point of curiosity from a Band Alum now living far from campus...Where is inspection now held? I remember standing at attention in formation in front of Northrop. It was a profoundly proud experience, paying homage to our great university in our colors getting ready to march our guts out. I'm excited to one day return home and experience gameday from early morning to post-game. It's been too long.

Go Gophers!
