More baffling than the decision to cough up $800K to get out of the North Carolina series was the U's agreement to play a game at New Mexico State for this coming season. How could the financials not be in our favor to host this game? This game will be destined to be broadcast online via ESPN3 at the very best.

Did the University figure that the best way to garner early season interest in the 2013 team would be to make them travel to an obscure locale with little to no chance of any media picking up this game to show on TV? Great forethought. I could stomach hosting NMSU for the 2nd time in 3 years but to travel to Las Cruces should be below a Big 10 team. Arrogant way of looking at things but true. There won't be more than 300 Gopher fans that make this trip.

Stop! Quit making me angry! Hopefuly CBSSports will want Big Ten team on their network LATE on a Saturday night early in the season. I guy can hope, right?

Just finished looking at NMSU's schedule and results the past 10 years. They have hosting exactly one non-conference BCS level opponent in that time frame. I was actually shocked that California played in Las Cruces in 2005. Difference being that New Mexico State back then was affiliated with the WAC and had a built in home conference schedule. Now they are independents with absolutely no leverage to host game if they want to play against BCS level teams.

How long has it been that a Gopher football game wasn't on TV? I'm not worried about it.

September, 16 2006 at Metrodome vs. Temple. Gophers win 63-0.

Exactly. By that point, it will have been just short of 7 years. And college football has penetrated TV lineups all over even more deeply than they did at that time. It will be on TV. I'm not worried about it.

I'm more worried about the game at Miami (OH) in 2016. Maybe we'll have flying cars by then so I can just go to the game in person instead. Crossing my fingers.

What worries me the most is the TBA game time though. How the hell am I suppose to set my schedule if I don't know when the game is going to be? I blame Maturi.

I am definitely going to try to attend! So, only 298 more to go! :)

Already booked my flights to Albuqerque (sp?) with FF miles - While a bit off the beaten path - a 200 mile drive or so down to Las Cruces, I enjoy going to places I've never been. See you there, Gopher Nation.

Me too! I was just looking into flights into Albuquerque the other day. El Paso would be quite a bit shorter of a drive than 'querque, but looks like it would be about $150-200 more expensive to fly into. So, I'm still up in the air about where to fly to.

Norman Dale talking out the side of his mouth. Las Cruces is pretty nice. Creative Charters will send one plane and maybe two. So that is 360 fans. Flights are about half of what they were to Houston. We're planing to take a group out there. If you golf, some beautiful courses in the area.
On a side note. It amazes me how people can bad a mouth a trip that is 9 months away and of course without any knowledge of said location. I guess they just like to hear themselves spew. Unreal...

The game will be carried on either Gopher All Access or findmeifyoucan.com

There are a lot of Gopher fans in AZ that will make this trip also.

Las Cruces is pretty nice, huh Ruppy? That may be and I'll take your word for it. Never attempted to denigrate the city itself. Creative Charters may send one plane. That's great! How many would have been sent to Charlotte or Raleigh/Durham if Kill wouldn't have gotten his way? Would you rather be teeing up at Pinehurst No 7 or Red Hawk in Las Cruces? Fact is we'll get a fraction of fans to Las Cruces as would have travelled to North Carolina.

At an earlier point in my life I woulnd't think twice about if the football game would be televised as I'd be on a plane visiting a destination I'd probably never visit if it wasn't for Gopher football. Priorities and responsibilities change. My beef is that the U has to play nice to NMSU and give them a home game after cancelling the UNC series - something I'd have a problem with even if I could travel to Las Cruces.

Ruppy, I can always count on you for 2 things 1) good golf course recommendations 2) the latest Gopher fashion updates from your local Mills Fleet Farm. You're probably the best dressed Gopher fan in the Central Lakes area sporting the latest pleather.

Norman Dale.... You will get a good cross section of Alumni traveling from Arizona and California to the New Mexico State game. I talked with several people in Houston that are going for the simple fact they've never been to New Mexico. I don't know if you made the Las Vegas trip or not, but there were quite a few people from California that made the trip. The " tobacco belt" is not that great of a location. We're not talking Myrtle Beach here my good man. Tell you what Norman Dale,
If the Gopher fan base doesn't travel more than 300 people to the New Mexico State game I'll buy you lunch/drinks at Pittsburg Blue at Arbor Lakes in Maple Grove You don't even have to reciprocate. Cheers...

Damn. Norman dale's last post had me bursting with laughter. Good one.

I am going to inform my daughter and her family in Phoenix that they may have company so we can go to the game in Las Cruces. Less than 400 miles.

I'll start with a Maker's Mark Old Fashioned, the Lump Crab Cakes and the Steakhouse Wedge salad. Another Old Fashhioned then move onto the main entree with a filet mignon (medium rare) along with the asparagus and hollandaise sauce. Maybe a nubbin of chocolate desert to end the night.

Of course I'll have to take your word for it that you'll personally count all Gopher fans in attendence as I won't be able to count them since the game won't be on TV :p

If I had to argue any point in your quoted response is that I find it hard to believe you'll get many of the western-based alumni to the game in Las Cruces just because it's "out west." CANNOT compare AT ALL to the Vegas game. The allure of Las Vegas vs Las Cruces notwithstanding, Las Vegas is so much easier to get to by car or air vs. the LONG drive needed through the desert in the summer heat from nearly anywhere or catching a minimum of one connecting flight to get to ELP then a drive up to Las Cruces.

I am not gonna worry about TV. Why not? My daughter, who lives in Phoenix, has a birthday on 09/03. I am gonna plan a vacation with her and her family then. We are going to go to Las Cruses for the game, a mere 400 mile one way trip, get in to Las Cruces the night before the game to meet and party with Gopher fans, and stay overnight the night of the game to meet more Gopher fans and party some more. My bucket list now has started filling.

I've heard Las Cruces has changed a lot with it being a cheap alternative for snowbirds, but I lived there in the mid-late 90's. It definitely was NOT a nice spot then. The transplants referred to it as 'Lost Causes'. I got out of there as quickly as I possibly could.

Think Breaking Bad. Think El Paso. Think Juarez.

If New Mexico State doesn't have a deal in place with some other channel, I don't think anything would prevent them from asking the BTN to cover the game.

Has BTN EVER broadcast a game not played in a B1G venue?

Never considered that before but that is a really good question. Even the two basketball games that were on the road this year were on different networks, pac-12 and ESPN 2.

I have no idea how accurate this is, but I looked at some past Indiana schedules, as I know they've played some less than marquee away games in recent years. It looks like they played at Western KY in 2010 and the IU website says the TV coverage was handled by Big Ten Network. IU also played similar road games in 2011 and 2012 (at North Texas and at UMass). It says those games were on ESPN3. I think it helps the odds of the game ending up on ESPN2, U or CBSSports that Las Cruces is in the Mountain Time Zone, especially if the game ends up late afternoon or night.
