After backstopping the No. 1 Minnesota men’s hockey program to the first sweep in Big Ten Conference history, Adam Wilcox has been named the league’s Third Star of the Week.
The South St. Paul, Minn., native picked up his first career Big Ten weekly honor after stopping 64 of 68 shots (.941 save percentage) over the weekend as the Gophers picked up two wins and six league points on the road against Penn State. The netminder made 28 saves in Minnesota’s 3-2 win over the Nittany Lions on Sunday in the first-ever meeting between the two Big Ten programs and then matched his career high with 36 saves in Monday’s 5-2 win.
Wilcox leads all Big Ten goalies with 14 wins this season (14-2-3 overall record) and is unbeaten in Minnesota’s last eight games.
Minnesota has now earned Big Ten honors in each of the team’s 10 weeks of competition this season – Minnesota’s first in the new Big Ten Conference. This week’s honor for Wilcox brings the Gophers’ season total to 13 weekly honors from nine different players.
The Gophers return to action this Friday with the Hockey City Classic at TCF Bank Stadium. Minnesota hosts Ohio State at 8 p.m. for the first outdoor college hockey game in Minnesota in the modern era on the Big Ten Network, BTN2Go.com and 1500 ESPN. The two teams meet again on Saturday as part of Hockey Day Minnesota. The series finale is set for 5 p.m. at Mariucci Arena on FOX Sports North, BTN2Go.com and 1500 ESPN.
