The worst, ignorant, self denying, idiots in college football. Its no wonder the "big"names had no interest. Maybe they wanted to have their friends come to a game and enjoy a glass of wine up in the suite. Not here. Maybe they wanted to know if we as a fan base were behind the program. Not here. In the end the same BS would be posted no matter who would have been hired. At least we have a guy who wants to be here, who earned it, who has experience. Wake up people, we just don't cut it, at least some of you.

I look at it completely differently. We hired a pretty good coach and people are up in arms and/or disapointed in the process. To me that says that Gopher fans are passionate and tired of losing.

I really do not understand the negativity over this hire. Was it a Tubby like hire? No. Was it a solid hire? Yes. Coach K is a proven winner with a hard nosed coaching style that is needed here in MN. I think this guy is going to surprise a lot of people on this board. It is time to start taking names of all those that are down on this hire and see what they are saying in a year from now. I have a feeling the attitude will have changed.

Yeah, having read numerous ncaa sports boards sorry the gopherhole is not the tops in the negativity department.

Agreed 100%. Save yourself Coach Kill! Run!

People are going to complain no matter what, but have you ever visited other teams' message boards? It is the same everywhere else.

Spot on!

The difference is those other programs have fans that continue to attend games. They might use every expletive under the sun, but they remain loyal to their teams.

We lost our fire and brimstone when the Gophers moved in to the sterile confines of the Metrodome. No signs. No intimidating the opponents because we might offend them or give some Kenwood matrons nightmares of the Marching Band leading monsters on to the field. Be careful of the cheering, it might damage some people's hearing.

The reason there are fewer TSA protests from UM alumni is that we got used to being strip searched for any signs of enthusiasm when entering the Metrodome. This means that strip searches for things like exploding underpants generate next to no ire once you've had your ability show pride for your school surgically removed.

You're correct about the move off campus all but killing any real fan-base.During my lifetime, I can't remember a single season that wasn't disappointing in some way.

This board, in particular, should be proud of the crazy enthusiasm. If you visited another board's site to see what they were saying about their team and the potential for their coach to be hired by the U you likely noticed that they didn't have anywhere near the enthusiasm and vigor of GopherHole.com. This is some good stuff on here and it's proof that there is some serious passion. Now, obviously, there are times when people get a bit too worked up (including me) and or a bit irrational, but in general it's a pretty great forum. Plus, there is space for heavy posters and lurkers alike. I think Kuato Lives!' point is accurate about Gopher fans being tired of losing and disappointed in the process. And GopherJay...Simply put, I disagree. To suggest we don't cut it as fans is totally reasonable, however, since it's your opinion. That said, I disagree, and think it's absolutely great that we're so fired up and that there were thousands of fans continually monitoring Gopher Hole for updates over the past few weeks. If you're a coach that is some serious energy you can harness. U of M football is depressing and it's been that way since I was a kid in diapers at the old Memorial Stadium. There must be a light at the end of the tunnel and both cynical and positive enthusiasm bring energy to our progress.

Can't argue on the alcohol... But, any hire would've wanted to be here... a nice raise can do that... and I suggest reading a Tennessee message board right about now, or a Clemson message board. It is 10-times this in many, many places.

1984 should have been the bottom, but we have spent 20+ years going lower.

A lot of the negativity surrounding this hiring is Maturi's fault. The guy knows how to market his decisions with the worst of them. If he would have simply come out at the Brew Press Conference and said "We are looking to hire someone with a history of heach coaching, a history of winning, a history of playing football the right way and we are willing to pay that person accordingly" than no one would have been so annoyed with this hiring.

He cut off his own legs when he said stuff about "Tubby like hire" and "the pocket books are open". When you say that kind of stuff it implies (probably rightfully) that they were borderline desperate for the big name guys (Petersen, Patterson, Harbaugh) and it all but guranteed a backlash on a solid coach in Kill who has good credentials.

To me the reaction to Kill shows allot of arrogance by Gopher fans. I think Kill is a great hire and the type of person I would like to see at the helm. But for some reason, many Gopher fans thought Nick Sabin or Urban Meyer (types) were begging for the job and the U chose Kill.

Your memory is off - Memorial Stadium was a terrible stadium (seats way to far away from field) that was a similar scene of fan apathy. 6 of the last 11 seasons there saw average attendance of below 39k/year. The fan base was already tired of the losing long before they left for the Metrodome.

You nailed Bob. Maturi got our hopes way up and people were drinking the kool-aid. You think he would've learned a few things form dealing with Brew? I feel sorry for Kill but he is not what the people were hoping for and won't sell tickets. We will lose millions next year for sure and most likely a few years after that. Even if Kill can get this team to 7-5 next year the fanbase will continue to lose interest. Another thing, Kill is a coach we sniped from a MAC school while at least with Glen Mason we sniped a coach from a BCS school. So we know we can do better.

Bob, you are hitting grand slams this morning! Agree with everything.

Maturi's comments at the Brewster "firing" press conference had the same ominous effects as Brewster's comments at the Brewster "hiring" press conference. Maybe he should have gone over his statement with Mona. LOL.

Peps who took Maturi's familiar babble hook line and sinker have not been paying attention. This is how Maturi operates and he has a problem saying the right thing. Those who really expected a big name were dillusional and brainwashed.

Bob said it well. Maturi doesn't have that it in him.

I will be watching the press conference to see Maturi squirm and start sweating when questioned.

I myself in the beginning never really expected a big time hire knowing Joel was doing the hiring. However, I did start to gain hope with all the post telling people that we would be happy and that KFAN was just making crap up about us being turned down by top coaches. I was prepared to be happy when Randy Edsall was named the head coach but even that was wishful thinking. :(

"those who really expected a big name were dillusional and brainwashed."

so like everyone but you?

Yes, fans with high expectations were the problem. It wasn't the lack of funds, or you know, actual interest in competing for anything more than a New York Strip bowl, commitment to building a top flight football program, or the lame duck President and AD (who'll be comfortably retired when the next AD has to replace Kill).

YOU are the reason we don't cut it. Aw shucks fly over country ignorant back woods .500 is good enough for me as long as we try hard and people like us twits that value being from a small town in the mid west more than ANYTHING else.

We aren't going to have a consistently competitive program until jackasses like the thread starter get a eulogy and we get a fan base willing to make their voices heard. As opposed to sitting on their hands and only taking them out to clap regardless of who the eventual hire is.

Disgusting. You out to be ashamed of yourself.

I disagree. I think the opposite will happen. If Coach K gets this team that went 3 - 9 to go 7 - 5 next year, I think interest in the program will sky rocket because everyone will be expecting improvement the following year based on Coach K's track record. I for one do not expect the team to go 7 - 5 next year, but if it did I would be happy as hell.

Well I know this for sure: Selling my two extra Gopher Football tickets has been nearly impossible since the Wisconsin game last year.
