This could explain why the Gophers and many other teams steered clear of Mike Leach:

The NCAA is accusing Texas Tech of major rules violations tied to nearly 1,000 impermissible text messages sent to football, softball and golf prospects.

The NCAA released its findings Friday. It said the school discovered the violations and reported them to the NCAA.

Penalties could include two years probation, recruiting restrictions and scholarship reductions.

The NCAA says the football violations occurred between August 2007 and February 2009, which would have come under former coach Mike Leach. The NCAA says the football coaching staff sent approximately 234 text messages to 45 prospective student-athletes.

This sounds like an institutional issue. I don't think Leach was sending txt messages to softball and golf recruits.

While I can imagine a school or search committee contacting Tech about Leach, I can't imagine them (Tech) revealing the results of an ongoing investigation given that they are already involved in litigation with Leach.

Having said that, I could introduce you to at least one person who is convinced that Kent Hance is personally calling any school where Leach is rumored to be a candidate, so I guess you never know.

I heard Leach is interested. lol ;)

Moot point, even if Leach is completely at fault.

This is obligatory.

Junior is in Minnesota as we speak and is loving it!! Perfect fit. He had Texas tech at his house on Tues,

This has absolutely nothing to do with why leach hasn't been hired. For one reason. Don't pretend that the people doing the hiring knew about this, they didn't. It will definitely harm him in the future, but it had no effect on recent hirings that have already occurred.

This just came out. Minnesota and Maryland and others had already made hires after this came out. If this had even been known by Texas tech one year ago they would have used it to fire him with cause. They wouldn't have needed the James incident.

Now I bet they are pleased they didn't make the hire of leach I'm sure (though they already were happy they didn't hire leach). But it had nothing to do with them looking elsewhere.

What happens to tech? What happens to the east Carolina coach?

It just came out to the public, but to think there weren't rumors and whispers about this among the professional community is pretty naive.

I agree that this has had little to do with Leach's current predicament. Leach marches to a beat of a different drummer and that can be good when it works and bad when it doesn't. My guess is that most places are seeing the glass as half-empty with Leach. I don't think suing your former employer is helping him either.

I wonder if Texas Tech was just bound and determined to get rid of him or if there was some act of contrition Leach could have performed to stay there. Things we'll never know.

This has nothing to do with why teams are staying away from Leach. It's all about getting resolution to his wrongful termination and slander lawsuits.

My guess is that Texas Tech "self-reported" to make Leach look bad and bolster their defense in Leach's lawsuit. They claim they fired him with cause. they need more evidence, thus the reporting of a pretty low-level violation.

I'm fairly certain you could go to any university and find out they send "excessive" texts to potential recruits......

While I agree with your first statement that this likely didn't have anything to do with why Leach hasn't been hired yet, the quoted part is not true.

Yesterday is when the NCAA released its report and a statement that it is accepting Tech's self-imposed penalties.

The violations were discovered sometime in 2009 and an initial report was filed with the NCAA in July of 2009--both of which occurred before Leach was fired. It's taken since then to finish the investigation and for the NCAA to release its report.

Again, it's possible that someone talked about the violations to a school that was interested in Leach, but I really doubt it--especially since texting is such relatively small potatoes.
