This guy will bring in the money to the program that they are looking for.
He is a proven winner and a great leader, regardless of some punk ass whinny kid in Lubbock says. We all know the kid was not that good of a player his dad made him out to be, and Leach exposed that.

We need this guy, or the U can kiss any chances of competing for the next 5-10 years out the door.

If the U misses this opportunity, they will enjoy 5 win season for a long time.

Look around, you'll find plenty of threads that address the "Leach Issue". Astute arguments have been made both for and against his hiring. The consensus seems to be that he wont be hired not necessarily because of his player issues, but because no school wants to hire a guy that sued his old school.

Personally, I think your assertion that the U couldn't possibly compete without him is absurd. There are many teams in the FBS that have somehow managed to compete without Mike Leach. Leach is not a silver bullet, and there are other qualified coaches.

Mike Leach is not discussable on this board. The guy is a solid coach, no one doubts this (well no one rational). The guys has baggage, no one doubts this (well not one rational).
There are some that claim he never had a chance at getting the job, but they know no more than I do.
There are some that claim he is the only viable option, but they know no more than I do.

The only things that are 100% certain, whether Mike Leach is or is not a realistic candidate, nobody will ever know unless he is announced as the hire on the day of the hire. Even the people who claim he has no chance have no idea of the conversations that may or may not have taken place about him. The other thing that is 100% certain, Maturi and the president had at least 1 discussion about the guy, because if they didn't they weren't doing their jobs (and no one knows if there was more than one discussion and what was said).

Because he's a flake, a good Xs and Os coach, but a flake nonetheless. You don't build (or re-re-rebuild) a program around a flake - the downside is just too much.

Just ask Texas Tech. He couldn't rebuild them and can't do it here because he is flake.
Really, do you guys read the crap and bs you post on here. There are plenty of arguments to be made against Leach but saying he can't rebuild a program is not one.

One thing we all need to remember is that the university and the search firm are doing deep background checks on all potential candidates. No matter who your favorite candidate is, there may be some information that you are totally unaware of that could quickly change your mind. I'm sure they know much, much more about Leach than anyone on this board and this information will influence their decision accordingly.

Rebuilding a program is more than the team winning, it is building bridges to the university administration, legislature, students, alumni, and general public. It is bringing positive press to the university through the team and its actions on and off the field. Leach can rebuild a team, but I sincerely doubt he can rebuild a program.

+1.

I want Leach for selfish reasons. The reason being...winning. I would like to watch a winner sooner than later. I know it won't happen, but that is what I want.

Frankly, I'd be less worried about Leach's "behavior" than I would the actions of Bo Pelini. But, in this sissified state that we live in, there's no room for a coach who isn't as boring as a 2-hour lecture on geology. When is it going to be enough? The guy didn't cheat and his players graduated. Oh, by the way, he won too. Apparently in Minnesota it's OK to put a bunch of nutjobs, psychos and blowhards into public office, but you can't have a guy who digs pirates running a perpetually crappy football program.

But mainly it is about winning.

How is he a "flake"?

Maturi is an IDIOT and is the kind of person who will not hire anybody that has any baggage at all. It could be 30 yrs. ago, but he is a purist. He has a huge case of Little Mans Syndrome!! I am never wrong, even though he was with Brew.

The intense anger being leveled at Maturi for not hiring Leach might be a little more understandable if:
(1). We had announced the new hire and it was not Leach. How can you get mad at something that hasn't happened yet?
(2). Someone can present some proof that Leach is interested in the job.

I guess we should all blame Maturi if he doesn't hire our dream candidate. It will be undeniable proof that he doesn't care about winning.

I was all about a Leach hiring initially, but the reason I don't mention him anymore is because it seems like the door's already been closed on him coming to Minnesota. Doogie has reported multiple times that Leach has no shot at the job, and so that removed pretty much all the steam from a Leach candidacy from my own perspective.

I'd still love to see the guy wind up here, but now I'm tending to focus on coaches who at least seemingly have a semi-realistic shot at actually coming here.

The thing I find interesting in here is that those who want Leach REALLY want him while most of those who don't have them at the top of their list (or even in their top 5) aren't nearly as animated in their coolness toward him.

True. Pelini to me seems borderline psychotic, and his behavior on the sidelines there is an embarrassment to the University in my opinion. Given his actions and his demeanor, I'd be worried that at some point he's just going to lose it completely and either physically assault a referee or one of his own players.

Leach is a total character, but he is hardly the seething ball of barely contained rage that Pelini is.

This!

This. Very nicely said as well.

The funny thing is the Great Joel Maturi said he would not consider Mike Leach from Day 1. Had the search committee done due diligence on him prior to Day 1? I doubt it.

Firejumper,
Not sure where you got your information. Maturi was asked during the press conference if Bellotti or Leach could be viable candidates (or words to that effect) and Maturi said something to the effect that that's what they would be determining through the search process.

I would like to see any quote where Maturi or anyone else involved in the search process ruled out Leach. Proof?

I'm telling you man this guy is proven. He won A LOT at TT. I have family from west Texas and had the pleasure of seeing a few games live in 05 and 07. WOW!! He knows how to run a program right. no bull*&^!#*&^!#*&^!#*&^!#. What I saw in Lubbock want that here!!

Not that it really matters, but Leach really did do all of that stuff. Texas Tech never got as much positive press as it did under Mike Leach. They never played a more meaningful game than when they beat Texas.

Besides connection with the administration, how did he not build a bridge to the students, alumni and the general public?
