Why does the next coach need to have Minnesota-ties?

This is the criteria that absolutely drives me crazy, when AD's like Joel say that the coach needs to have Minnesota ties or understand Minnesota football. I wish we would just look at coaches objectively for their coaching/recruiting rather than if they are a Minnesota guy.

Would Trestman even be considered if he wasn't a U Alum? NO!

Closed circuit to Joel: Please get a competent coach regardless of his affiliation with MN or the U. Tubby Smith seems to be working out quite well...

The only tie to Minnesota that I desire from the next coach is that he wants to coach football at the U of M.

I'm not sure why people are so worried about this. It's the media who are telling us who the candidates are and since the media is largely local, they're going to give special attention to candidates with local ties. We'll never have any direct information about who the REAL candidates are other than knowing who ultimately gets the job. Adding on to something that someone pointed out in another thread, the U hasn't hired a coach in the top two sports (football and men's basketball) with local ties since Salem back in the late 70's. Why do you suddenly believe that trend will change now? Joel just meant that the coach needs to understand the unique set of challenges that this job offers - it's very different from the other Big Ten schools.

--Right. Maturi needs to explain the link "understanding Minnesota" and winning football games. Loved the Tubby hire but listening to him lately is painful. We need a coach who understands how to win BCS conference football games, and has a record of doing it.
--Maturi also sounds like he thinks that he should be the coach, with his love for the Wisconsin experience. How can Minnesota find its football identity if the AD has already decided it should look like Wisconsin? Is it that understanding Minnesota is really all about understanding Wisconsin? What a load of crap.
