I cannot understand where people think Tubby will be going next year. Yes, he is having a bad year, but that does not mean he won't be here next year. The way I see it there are three routes that lead to Tubby not being the coach of the Gophers next year.
1. Tubby is fired.
This is not happening. There is no way that Maturi will fire Tubby.
2. Tubby resigns.
This seems highly unlikely. Tubby has a couple years left on his contract and would play them out if for no other reason than to make that last $5-6 million.
3. Tubby leaves for another school.
This is the most likely of the options, but Tubby is not the big time coach now that he was 4 years ago. His stock has dropped, and he is no longer that A+ hire that many thought he was. I don't think that Georgia Tech would pay the rumored $5+ million buyout for Hewitt so that they can pay Tubby in excess of $2 million per year (because he would want more money than he is making here or why would he leave?) considering that in the last 4 years Tubby has not finished above .500 in conference play, won a game in the Tourney, or even finished a season not on the bubble. The bottom line is that it's a numbers game and a school would have to justify spending $2+ million on Tubby and possibly a buyout for their current coach. Given Tubby's recent track record, that might not be justifiable. In addition, Tubby might not want a job elsewhere. I am sure that the last few seasons have been very stressful, and he could be looking forward to retirement at the end of his contract. He may not want to lock into a 5+ year contract at another school and rebuild another program.
Any thoughts?
