I cannot understand where people think Tubby will be going next year. Yes, he is having a bad year, but that does not mean he won't be here next year. The way I see it there are three routes that lead to Tubby not being the coach of the Gophers next year.

1. Tubby is fired.
This is not happening. There is no way that Maturi will fire Tubby.

2. Tubby resigns.
This seems highly unlikely. Tubby has a couple years left on his contract and would play them out if for no other reason than to make that last $5-6 million.

3. Tubby leaves for another school.
This is the most likely of the options, but Tubby is not the big time coach now that he was 4 years ago. His stock has dropped, and he is no longer that A+ hire that many thought he was. I don't think that Georgia Tech would pay the rumored $5+ million buyout for Hewitt so that they can pay Tubby in excess of $2 million per year (because he would want more money than he is making here or why would he leave?) considering that in the last 4 years Tubby has not finished above .500 in conference play, won a game in the Tourney, or even finished a season not on the bubble. The bottom line is that it's a numbers game and a school would have to justify spending $2+ million on Tubby and possibly a buyout for their current coach. Given Tubby's recent track record, that might not be justifiable. In addition, Tubby might not want a job elsewhere. I am sure that the last few seasons have been very stressful, and he could be looking forward to retirement at the end of his contract. He may not want to lock into a 5+ year contract at another school and rebuild another program.

Any thoughts?

It has happened that moving from a frustrating year to a new next year has resulted in ALL of the Coaching Staff and ALL of the players using a year like this as a motivation factor. One BIG example I recall is the 1990 Twins (last place) to the 1991 Twins (WS Champions)...Time will tell.

As with all things, the best quote is a "Yogi-ism"........."It's hard to make predictions, especially about the future."

I agree. Tubby ain't going anywhere. He's got a fantastic gig here. Why would he give up a handsome paycheck with very minimal expectations? Go 9-9 or 8-10 every year, sneak into the tournament every other year on average and he gets a street named after him on campus or a statue outside the Barn. He literally can do no wrong. He's got built in excuses from every angle (injuries, transfers, no practice facility, cold weather, negative media, etc.) Why give that up?

I don't think Tubby is going anywhere.

He is 60 years old and I am sure he doesn't want to go start over
and try to rebuild another program.

I also don't think any jobs that would be considered a "step up" from
Minn. would give Tubby much consideration. Like it or not he is not
the same coach that won a National Title at UK several years ago.
I do not hear his name mentioned for any big time jobs. At least not
by the people who do the hiring. Some fans of Tubby may toss his
name around as being a candidate but that doesn't count.

I am of the opinion that Tubby will finish out his current contract, sign an
extension if promised a practice facility and try and improve on this year
to end his career on a higher note than he is currently on.

Dr Don - This is exactly what I hope happens and I think it may. Monson stunk it up with the Humphries squad and came back with a bunch of nobodies (at that time) and went 10-6 in the Big Ten. I am hoping Tubby is fired up and ready to take a fresh look at things next year.

You're nuts to think they are going to be any good next year. They will be lucky to win three conference games. Mbakwe stinks, Sampson's awful, Colton should be playing at SDSU, Williams should be at Normandale, the guys we recruited couldn't play at UNI, Tubby can't coach and Saul messes everything up!!!

I'm hoping some of these points are supposed to be sarcastic

They all were...well most of them. I'm looking forward to watching next years team. I really don't like the big lineup, but I don't think Tubby really has many options.

My thoughts?

Tubby is not leaving.

As he likes to say, "we have work to do".

I for one am proud to have Tubby Smith as our coach.

Way too early to tell. I think Tubby will complete the next 3 years at Minnesota per his contract but I have NO IDEA what may happen.

UK was 263-83 (76%) in 10 years under Tubby and 131-40 (77%) his last 5 years at UK.

Since he left, UK is 95-38 (71%) without him.
