With the regular season complete, what teams surprised you the most this year? Here is mine:
1) Michigan State. No way did I see this one coming. QB play didn't help but they were whooped on both lines.

2) Wisconsin. I thought they would be above average, but their defense is exceptional. They've overcome injuries too. They deserve the attention.

3) Penn St. I was not impressed earlier in the year. I thought MN was cleary better, yet they won. QB has improved tremendously and they will give Bucky a battle.

Every other team is not far from what I expected prior to the season starting.

Top three Pleasent Surprises
1) Penn State winning the East
2) Indiana winning four conference games and going bowling back to back years despite a loss to Wake Forest
3) Northwestern rebounding from a putrid out of conference showing and winning five conference games. (Giving us a win over a team with a winning big ten record)
Top three Flops
1) Michigan State Pretty obvious
2) Iowa although they rallied with two big wins at the end and they beat us, they did bring the core of their rose bowl team back
3)Wisconsin. Not a flop but if they were ever going to this was the year the impending flop was a flop

Everyone else pretty much where they were expected, I guess Maryland making a bowl was a surprise and I guess I didn't think Rutgers would be this bad, Yikes!

1. Sparty being so bad.
2. Minnesota being so thoroughly mediocre after 6 years. Expected a lot more after listening to Claeys in the preseason.
3. Wisconsin beating LSU and generally surviving their tough schedule.
4. Penn State turning it around. After Michigan crushed them I thought Franklin was done. PSU was done until the red zone pick against us.
5. Purdue biting the bullet and firing Hazell despite the buyout price. Didn't think they had the dollars for that.

5 didn't surprise me but I'm right with you on 1-4.

MSU doing so bad
NW I thought would be better
Minn underachieving
WI much better than I had hoped
Mich taking the next step up to being elite

If what a coach says preseason about his team sets your expectations, that is on you. I was disappointed this year too, but that is an odd reason to be so.
