All the big names? Someday we'll know. It's obvious now that Mason should have been kept on through his extended contract - the U would have saved tons of money, we would never have suffered the debacle of Brewster, and the position would have been more attractive to BCS coaches. Can Kill go above .500 in a Big Ten that now includes Nebraska as a yearly opponent for us? I wonder...

There were plenty of rumors about who turned down the Gophers. The interesting thing is it seems they all turned down the Gophers even before an offer was made.

Based on statements made at the start of the search and the results, I think it can be safely assumed that we were turned down by a number of coaches, it may have happened long before any offer was ever extended, or even interest. How many, nobody will ever know. That doesn't make this a bad hire though.

As the original poster stated, I think the last four years puts the firing of Mason in a different light. Mediocre results long term might be better than what we ended up with. Time will tell what will happen. It can only get slightly worse though, so hopefully things are looking up.

I think Kill is a good but not great hire.

I agree that Mason going 6-6, 7-5 for an extra year or two probably would have made this job less of a step down for most of the rumored candidate.

If you look at all the reports the NIU A.D. was not contacted until last Friday. That tells me that everybody turned Maturi down and he was desperate. Of course it goes without saying that he didn't even consider Leach, Mullen, Fedora, Trestman, Chryst, or keeping Jeff Horton. Matrui needs to go NOW.

Firing Mason (especially the way it was done) was a bone-headed, amaturish move. Delusions will continue until people can come to grips with that. I think some people will go to their grave unable to admit that they were way off-base with that one. It is really ammazing the lengths people will go to, logically, to avoid having to admit to themselves that they were wrong.

I'm curious too, but it doesn't matter. If Joel weren't already on his way out, I'd want to know to see how bad he effed up and hope he get's fired. The hire is done and we can't change it. Joel won't be here for the next hire, so who cares?

or it tells me someone had agreed to the job and then backed out last week.

That's the most interesting scenario - somebody backed out. I hope we find out the details.
