And why does he hate Texas A&M so much? He ranked us lower than any other voter, yet ranked texas university higher than anyone else. Is he just clueless, or a genuine tool?

Does the Strib have any real sports journalists?

He's a pretty nice guy.

Beat Bama Saturday and all will be well. How come you aren't asking about Hunt from the Oregonian?

Haha that's a fair gripe, I think most up here would view Miller as the fairest of the startrib jurnos. But to answer your last question "Does the strib have any real sports journalists", the answer is an overwhemling no.

You can ask him yourself though. He usually does a gophers/college football chat on Wednesdays I believe, around noon.

Seems like a odd bias to have. Phil is usually fairly level headed, so not sure on this. That said, Phil Miller's most endearing quality is that he is not Jim Souhan or Patrick Reusse.

the more I think about it, it probably is just an indication of our state's lack of awareness of what's going on in the wider college football world.

Not sure why Phil missed this one but maybe with this thread he'll get it right next time. Good luck to your Aggies the rest of the way.

Forget Miller. Win on Saturday and the Aggies will get a LOT of votes!

I almost wonder if this guy confused the two of us. We're the one stayed within 3 of Florida and 5 of LSU. texas is the one who almost got whipped by Kansas!

We're going to try to pull off a victory on Saturday. I have tickets for the game, now I just need an economical way to get there. Anyone here happen to be driving eastbound along I-20 and willing to take some hitchhikers? :)

Good luck, dude!

That said, I'll have to say that chances are that our media doesn't follow the rest of the college football world as much as those in TX do.

geez, I'm sorry but I hate anything Texas, I wish they'd drop out of the union.

geez, I'm sorry but I hate anything Texas, I wish they'd drop out of the union.

I don't hate everything about Texas. GopherHole gained a good friend with TexasAggie11 when he and his Mrs. came to the Purdue game, gave us a good report of good experiences here and............Oh, never mind, I just noticed you are from Idaho. You guys do have good potatoes though.

Scoggins is the guy who likes college football the most, but he is an SEC guy from top to bottom. Good guy, but not quite as knowledgeable as I originally thought. I would say that about any Tennessee fan.

geez, I'm sorry but I hate anything Texas, I wish they'd drop out of the union.

I hope they drop out of the union as well.. If/when that happens, I'm moving to Texas.

A couple of e-mail responses received from the guys over at TexAgs, and one reply back to Mr. Miller

*****, thanks for the email, and the interest. I didn't mean to get in the middle of a rivalry, but I would hardly characterize a 19th-place vote, for a team that's 15th in the overall poll, as extreme, nor a 16th place vote for one that is 19th in the poll as a whole. I didn't compare them head-to-head, just tried to sort out a plethora of two-loss teams, with little evidence to go on. (Schedules, these days, with one cupcake after another, make this more impossible than ever.) Texas has wins over Texas Tech and Oklahoma State, a couple of decent teams. A&M has a win over Mississippi State, a good win, but against a team that really hasn't beaten anybody of note either. I haven't seen A&M play this season, and UT only once -- AP voters spend Saturdays covering their own games, not watching TV -- so I have no idea which team is better, and I would be more than willing to believe that you have more insight into it than I. But win on Saturday, and everything changes, doesn't it? I hope they do. -- Phil Miller _______________________________________

thanks for the email, and the interest. (I believe I also replied to you on Twitter, yes? Name seems familiar.) Anyway, I am perfectly willing to believe your analysis of those teams is far more accurate than my own. I've seen exactly zero A&M games this year, and just one UT, their opener vs. Wyoming. I have no idea which team is better, the notion that I "have such a strong take" or "know more than people who live in the state" is pretty funny. How exactly would I know what Texans think? But I would hardly characterize a 19th-place vote, for a team that's 15th in the overall poll, as extreme, nor a 16th place vote for one that is 19th in the poll as a whole.
> How do we separate a whole bunch of 7-2 teams? Best way would be for them to play, but I guess that's not possible anymore. So I look at the schedules: Texas has wins over Texas Tech and Oklahoma State, a couple of decent teams. A&M has a win over Mississippi State, a good win, but against a team that really hasn't beaten anybody of note either. It's not like I ever was comparing them head-to-head, and again, all I know about either one is what I've read or seen on highlight shows. But I can't say, with so little evidence to go on, that I'm uncomfortable with my ballot, either. Most AP voters like me have games to cover on Saturday and see only a handful of others. So the real question is, why would you care about my opinion at all?
> Anyway, thanks for the email, and your civil tone; not all Aggie emails have managed that. -- Phil
My reply

I will point out sir that you have been the only ranker out of the entire AP poll, to have A&M behind Texas for 3 straight weeks.

You are also the highest ranker on Texas 4 straight weeks.

You have been the lowest ranker on Texas A&M for 4 straight weeks.

I think you should reconsider that you think your rankings of the teams are not extreme.

You said you cannot differentiate between the two teams.

Total Defense

A&M 46
Texas 98

Total offense

Texas A&M 5
Texas 40

That's right, Texas is 40th in offense, and 98th nationally in defense.

You said that A&M only has one good win(#21 MSU, who they dominated) however you neglected to include #20 Louisiana Tech, who you ranked ahead of Texas Tech.

Texas has only beat one BCS top 25 teams, (tech, ranked 22nd) and the only other one they played they lost 63 -21

Texas has barely won both of their "quality wins".

Texas a&M has thoroughly dominated every team they have beat except ole miss, and la Tech. Texas has squeaked by Kansas(0 big 12 wins) and Baylor (1 big 12 win over Kansas) and oklahoma state(official error gave them a win).

Considering that every person that covers this region disagrees with your standing on the two teams, has for weeks, while you yourself has admitted that you dont watch the teams at all, wouldn't it make sense for you to follow the lead of the regional experts?

I will point out once more that A&Ms 2 losses were to Florida and LSU by 8 combined points and Texas losses were to much inferior opponents in Oklahoma and West Virginia.

You have Oklahoma only 3 spots ahead of Texas. Texas got absolutely dominated by Oklahoma. Nobody else in the country had these schools as close as you do.

This is a website that breaks down AP voting and it says you as extreme every week.

http://www.pollspeak.com/component/...lang,en/p,46/r,V/s,21/t1,95/t2,94/v,670/w,11/

On a side note, everyone at A&M thinks that Texas always gets the benefit of the doubt in the media, and seeing someone from minnesota vote so extreme for Texas when everyone else thinks they are not in A&Ms class, will really get us riled up.

Thank you for your time

Exactly why the college system is so flawed. You have people voting on teams they have never seen play. It's not Mr. Miller's fault as he has to do his job. It's just a crappy way to do things.

It is also a well known fact that GopherHole commentors vote for such and such a High School Player to be offered a Scholarship for the same reason. They do it to drop names and sound intelligent, but I know better. Right?

It was kind of eye-opening to me to read that they don't watch every team play. I just always assumed the voter types had a newsroom full of televisions to rival Buffalo Wild Wings to watch every game on or something.

i was talking to some of the minnesota twins pr guys and they said that they heard that miller will be covering the twins next season and will be off the gophers beat.

Same here...Texas sucks and so does A&M - Go find another board to post your Aggie crap on.

Wow you clearly don't read this board, otherwise you would know that this guy didn't just randomly pop up on our board asking thes questions. Throw your crap against another wall please.

Parski, I usually take your comments in lots of fun, but I really think you are out in the middle of the lake, in a cement boat that is leaking badly, and no paddle. And winter is coming.

I was truly surprised and disappointed in this comment you made to TexasAggie11. And to be honest, a PM apology to him would be appropriate.

Still your friend, however.

Doc

FWIW, I don't have a lot of respect for bully fan bases that get enraged and lobby for ranking.

Funny thing is that it usually backfires as the voters will overcompensate when they lose.

Haha, I don't need an apology - I'm the one who came stirring things up in this thread.

No one is trying to bully anyone into rankings higher than what are deserved. It just seemed like the guy might have a vendetta against A&M by the way he was ranking us.

Surely he will see highlights of us play on Saturday and will be able to determine that we have a good enough team to justify being inside the top 15.

Phil Miller seems like a nice guy, but is a bit clueless when it comes to college ball on the national level. His poll is pretty indicative of that. Any one that has watched A&M this year against Florida and LSU wouldn't have them ranked behind Louisville...that's a joke of a ranking. Texas, Ohio St, Louisville, USC all too high in my opinion. Aggies are a top 10 team for sure. Johnny Football baby!

That's the thing, he hasn't. Just like most of the people who vote in the poll because they are busy covering their own team.
