I am not trying to be a defeatist or an apologist, but I think people need to remember who this team has been:

Since the 2000 season, the Gophers are:

1-49  against teams that finished the season in the Top-25.

The lone win was the home victory against Nebraska in2013 (who finished the season at #26 in the AP and #25 in the Coaches Poll).

In that same time span versus teams that finished in the Top-25, Northwestern has 12 wins, and Illinois and Purdue each have 5 wins.

I feel confident that this statistic will improve, but it will take time (and may not improve as much as the local expectations will demand).

We have been a very poor team for quite some time :(

A very very depressing statistic for a fanbase to swollow. Hopefully a change is in the works.

Step by step.

I'll worry about top 25 wins after we get a claim a West Division title and some bowl wins.

Saw this and thought Ohio State 2000? Purdue 2005? I recall beating them when they were ranked high, but sure enough... unranked at the end. We've come close a number of times, but close doesn't count. Sobering stat, but I do think Kill will add to the one win he has in this column (more than once), as long as he and his recruits stick around.

Would like to see the same stat for WI, MSU, and let's say OSU for context...

Yikes. Shows you just how difficult beating ranked teams can be for everyone but Ohio State. Making it the end of year poll only makes it even more difficult. I remember the 2004 Wisc-Purdue game where Wisconsin beat #4 ranked Purdue and Kyle Orton in like week 7. Take a look at the final poll and Purdue isn't ranked.

I just threw up in my mouth a little bit.

Where did you find this stat?

Is Missouri our only "Top 25 at end of year" bowl opponent over this stretch?

So it basically comes down to (probably) beating the top 3 or 4 teams in conference each year?

Thanks for digging this up. Now I'm going to go barf...

If you really want to get depressed, go back another 15-20 years. You're not even including Wacker, Gutekunst, and Smokey Joe--3 of the most mediocre coaches we could have hired.

Under Mason we had a good offense most years, but a poor defense. Under Kill, a good defense most years (not Saturday), but a poor offense. If we can just get them together we'll win half or more of those top 25 games.

Yes. Arkansas was ranked #25 when we beat them in the 2002 Music City Bowl, so obviously they dropped out.

Wisconsin has bowl wins over final ranked teams Colorado (2002), Auburn (2005), Arkansas (2006), Miami (2009) and Auburn again (2014), plus two B1G title game wins in their tally.

Not gonna to do the whole schedules, because they lost a LOT, but Wacker beat #23 Syracuse (ended at #23) in '96 and the Badgers #15 (ended at #9) in 1993. Gutey beat #13 Iowa (ended #17) in 1990 and #2 Michigan (ended at #4) in 1986. Surprisingly enough even Joe Salem beat a #18 Ohio State team (ended-up at #17) in 1981.

I was informed here that we were a better team than Nebraska in 2013, so everyone can feel free to disregard that one as well.

This is the best/worst stat ever.

Since 2000, we've had no truly big-time wins.

We've probably had 2 in my entire lifetime (I'm under 40).

Of course some teams that had rankings finished unranked because they lost to us. It's a damning stat either way

Or we would lose every game depending on the combo, but I get what your saying. :)

Studwell,

As the OP of this depressing stat, I will say that we've had several really great wins...

2000 @ Ohio State (game rank = 6 season rank = 29)
2001 Michigan State (game rank = 27 season rank =32)
2002 Arkansas (game rank = 25 season rank = 35)
2003 Oregon (game rank = 30)
2005 @ Michigan (game rank = 21 season rank = 28)
2013 Nebraska (game rank = 25 season rank = 26)
2014 @ Nebraska (game rank = 21 season rank = 28)

Different sport, and a little different criteria (road/neutral games only), but those depressing numbers remind me of a stat Dan Monson compiled during his tenure as Gopher basketball coach. Monson was 0-44 in road/neutral games vs. teams that eventually qualified for the NCAA Tournament.

To put that in perspective, Richard Pitino (in 2 seasons) already has 3 such wins, all last season (vs. Georgia, @ Iowa, @ Final 4 participant Michigan State).

I thought Iowa last year was a great win.... Nebraska last year.

Not ranked and etc but man those were fun.

I think what Studwell is getting at (correct me if I'm wrong) is there haven't really been any recent wins that moved the needle nationally. ... beating a truly elite opponent. Sure, the Gophers have beaten Nebraska, Michigan, and Michigan State recently, but those occurred during seasons those programs weren't elite.

Yowzers, that stat is ugly. But FWIW the AP Poll is garbage and does not appropriately capture who the good teams are.

And to showcase how garbage the poll is I would like to point out that USC, currently unranked and without a single vote, is FAVORED by 3 points against # 3 Utah.

I always check the poll each week as a fan, but I think it struggles to correlate to how good teams actually are on the field.

We had this debate on here before, and I know I'm in the minority, but I think what a team is ranked at the game matters more than what they are ranked at season's end. In CFB more than any sport, IMO, there are ups and downs, injuries, etc and things change fast. Just because a team that is ranked 10th during week 6 ends up un-ranked, doesn't necessarily mean they weren't a #10 team at the time they played. If the Gophers win out and finished ranked 20th (play along here), does that mean the team Kent State almost beat was the 20th best team at the time we played them?

PS - that stat is ugly in any context.
