I had been pounding the drum against Tubby for since the middle to the conference season. Now, I think he deserves a good extention to his contract at Minnesota. Who else has changed their mind and what caused the change?

It is tough for me to change my mind about Tubby, it was already there (what you said). All I recognize is that Tubby knows a hell of a lot more about BB, coaching, supporting his pups, helping them grow up, and when the time is right, to turn them loose, much more so than many of the experts here.

To my knowledge, nobody on this board is contemplating applying for the position if and when it would open up. Nobody professes to be more than mere customers in this equation. You can cut your tiresome drumbeat any time.

Even though Dakick irritates me, I have to agree: the problem at Minnesota is not Tubby, it's the basketball program. Until the administration, AD and donors make basketball a priority, we're mediocre. I'll be in MSG screaming my head off!
Go Gophers!

Fiesty comment. I never expected a thread to be hijacked from Dr. Don so early. Don, since you have displayed a consistency of support during the year, this thread wasn't meant for you to comment. I was looking to see if others had truly changed their mind. If you want me to pull out a case of OP whoop :horse: to keep you on topic. Feel free.... Love ya!

Alright, I guess I can actually address the question, too.

Whether to extend Tubby is more of a strategic decision right now than one related to his performance, although it would sure be easier for the new prez to sign that paper if we'd had a better year. From my viewpoint, I speak for the wide cross section of people who are sick and f'ing tired of 6-12 conference records and off-season transfer extravaganzas that look like the famous line-change substitutions. If this feel-good NIT run isn't enough to keep players in the fold for next year, I'm going to get back to sour pretty quickly. And if the coaches aren't learning things through this experience about what works to make this group of guys play better together and apply it to next fall, I'll throw up my hands again. As others have said, the key isn't what's happening now; the key is whether it carries over to next season.

Didn't really have an opinion about an extension for Tubby because I was fairly certain the new A.D. would give him one.

Which is why I can't extend his contract right now, but I also can't tell him to go away right now.

But then not extending him now potentially hurts recruiting.

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!

They are playing better.

1.) Andre Hollins makes a big difference.
2.) Williams has really improved his game.
3.) The team seems to have better offensive flow without Ralph, not sure if it because of Andre but the middle has been more open for both Williams and Coleman.

The have the makings of a decent team, not sure what Mbwake returning will do to the mix, there should be improvement next year.

I left the Iowa home game and Indiana home game more dejected and indifferent than I've ever been. I'm too lazy to look it up, but I'm pretty sure I called for Tubby's head on this board (I recall being very concerned b/c I'd have to start over with a new username).

I'm still concerned about Tubby's flat line demeanor and perceived disinterest on the sidelines, but this end of season run has given me new hope for Tubby and our future prospects, and for the first time in a long time I really feel confident about the state of our CURRENT team (how often does a Gopher fan say that?!?).

Bingo!

+1 Dr Don, Couldn't agree more!

If you stopped pounding the drum against Tubby due to success in the NIT, then you probably shouldn't have started pounding your drum in the first place. I don't want to see a coaching change, but year 6 needs to bring Tubby's first winning Big Ten record and first NCAA tournament win at a bare minimum.

I support him! Never changed my mind. Once Mbakwe went down, I thought it would be a long season, and for stretches it was. I think Tubby did and is doing well. All things considered. FWIW, I'm a football guy so I can be challenged here.

For what it's worth, my thoughts on Tubby and his contract extension:

I have always thought Tubby should be extended. In fact, sometime in year one or two I was probably willing to give him a lifetime contract that gave Saul the job when he retired. Well I have changed my mind considerably since then. Last years final 12 games was the worst finish I can remember of any Gopher team - Distractions and injuries aside.

This years conference performance wasn't much better.

Joel kept saying that it was just a matter of time for Tubby's extension to be finalized. I was in favor of an extension but only if the U's buyout provisions were improved considerably.

The New PREZ Kaler came to town and said he did not want to renew any contracts until the end of a coach's season. More recently he wants the new AD to be involved in the discussion of Tubby's contract. I don't think Tubby appreciated this sudden delay in his contract extension that (according to SID ?) was supposedly close to being finalized. After all Tubby has a National Championship under his belt. He is very popular in the coaching community. His reputation for running a clean program is near impeccable. And now he has to wait for new AD who will get nowhere near the money Tubby makes.

Recently the team is playing much better. Change has come. Things have changed for the better. Was it the morning practices? Was it absence of Ralph or the emergence of Dre and Rodney? Was it keeping the players away from the exciting night life of Minneapolis? I wonder if it might be something else. Maybe the old principle of "new broom sweeps well" has caught Tubby's attention. Maybe he now he is feeling a little more job performance pressure to prove his worth as a well paid basketball coach. It seems to me he is a bit more engaged. He is more demonstrative in his support of the players. He is yelling more at the refs. IMO, he is showing the players he cares more about them. The Morning practices indicate the players have to work a little harder but the coaches have to as well. I even heard Tubby made 30 free throws in a row at practice the other day - just to show the players a thing or two.

Here is what i think will happen. The New AD is hired sometime in June. He announces almost immediately that he wants to extend Tubby for x number of years. He showers Tubby with accolades and hopefully mentions the recent NIT Championship. He says the U of M is fortunate to have someone of Tubby's caliber. He looks forward to working with Tubby to improve the BB program and maybe bring about a practice facility. What he doesn't say is that the contract will also include buyout provisions that improves the U's position considerably. Performance in the B1G has to show improvement from 6-12 or the U's buyout options likewise improve.

Captain Obvious says the improvement of the team recently is very noticeable. I have always been for extending Tubby but with a much improved buyout clause from the U's standpoint. With our recent improved play I am now a little more willing to yield to Tubby when negotiating the terms of the buyout clause.

To borrow and paraphrase from a more recent somewhat popular agenda... 'I want my Tubby back' - the one I (maybe unrealistically) expected 6 years ago.

Go Tubby - Go Gophers - Take Manhattan! And keep it going next year. There's always next year.

Are you seriously that fickle?

You too easily change your mind. If you are ok today, then I highly question why you were pounding the drum just weeks ago.

Your fickle demeanor in this situation is why coaching in sports is all messed up. Coaching decisions should not be made based on short-term emotions. I'm glad you're finally noticing why.

I am always supporting Tubby because I am always supporting the U of MN.

I've always thought Tubby has deserved 1 more season and if next season is another 6-12 or 7-11 type of season, I think his termination would be warranted, but if we did well, he deserved praise. That said, the NIT Run has only made me more confident that we will be better next season. I've really liked the way EE, Hollins and Williams have been playing and I think there is a better chance that we will be good next season than I did before the run.

So for me, the run itself doesn't do a TON for me, but if the improved play that has resulted in the run makes me excited about next season.

That argument "supporting the U" can be easily picked apart, especially under the (non) leadership of MIACturi in recent years. Under that thought process, Brewster should still be coaching the football team. That being said, the NIT run does give me optimism for next year (I have tickets for the semi-final game), tempered by Tubby's agents being actively out there inquiring about coaching vacancies.

You are making one fundamental logical error. You are assuming that by "supporting Tubby" that means that I am backing him coaching here forever. I thought Brew should have been canned after the South Dakota game in 2010, but I wanted him to succeed in all the games up until he was terminated, because I am a fan of the U. I will always cheer for the U and Tubby happens to be the coach, so de facto, I am supporting him. I want him to win. That does not mean that I think he isn't rippable on quite a few things.

Right, but I have supported the U over every comfortable and uncomforable game over the past 2 years, but still do not think the Tubby extension is a slam dunk (unless it results in a significantly reduced buy-out, which I would whole-heartedly support)

I think we are on the same page.

Always thought he would get some sort of an extension but don't think it is deserved. This little run in the NIT has done nothing to change my mind.

That's why you are a GH fool. This is great experience for the youngsters, next year is looking bright.

I have always supported Tubby and will continue to do so. It's nice to see all the trolls have decided to swan dive off their roofs and have posted less.
