Just thought I'd start a thread that was actually about an upcoming game.

This thread has already been started. The ISU fans that have come over have all been really nice, so we've decided the answer to your question is probably Iowa fans.

That said it would be fun to talk about the game.

Our toughest matchup is probably our running game against their run d, no surprise there. If we get our passing game together that should be our strength as they don't have the secondary to play with our wide outs, especially Gray. Our D should be interesting, playing really well and it's the last game for a lot of the starters but ISU does have some weapons, nothing better than we've seen so far though. I expect if we are going to win it'll be because of some big defensive plays. But it should be a good game regardless.

I only have so much room in my heart for hate. HokeYeyes and skunks fill it.

Definitely a winnable game

It interests me that you cite Gray as being a receiving weapon. While I agree with you - he has a tremendous upside and potential at that position given his athletic ability - it distresses me in that it brings me back to the quarterback "controversy". I am not up to speed on Iowa State's QB situation, but it seems to me that the deciding factor in whether we win the game or not will be whether we get the Michigan State Weber or the South Dakota State Weber since our coaching staff refuses to play Gray at that position. I hope Alipate or Pride can beat out Weber next year because it sure doesn't look like they are going to let Gray go there. Beat the Cyclones!

I think Gray at wideout is only planned for the bowl game. He's a big athletic target with deceptive speed. The question is, can he run enough routes to play a lot of snaps.

My bet is that right after the bowl game Gray is back at QB competing for the starting job next year.

You're right I don't really know what his route running skills are. I think though they will/should use him for widereciever screens and quick outs. Get him the ball and let him make something happen. Speaking of this kind of play, I wish we had done a lot more of it during the season. Quick pass plays would work a lot better considering the criticisms the offense has received, bad line, our QB play... Seems like it worked decently the few times we got it out quick to Troy Stud and Gray.

I sort of agree with you. Iowa State's biggest weakness is our D-Line, which matches up with Minny's biggest weakness, their run game. ISU's biggest strength is our O line and running game, which matches up against Minny's strength, the D line.

Whichever team can overcome those situations should come away with the W. IMO

My fault ISU phoria I had it in my head it was your secondary you were worried about. You say you have a weak d line? The Gophers haven't really torn apart weak D line's this year so this could be a problem if we have difficulty taking advantage.

1997 vs. Iowa State (1-10) W 53-29
1990 vs. Iowa State (4-6-1) W 20-16
1989 @ Iowa State (6-5) W 30-20

I don't hate Iowa State at all. The above is probably why. Think they would still sign-up for a 2-for-1 against us?

Our secondary is OK (middle of the road), but our D-line has had a lot of trouble getting pressure on opposing QB's, so we do give up quite a few passing yards. But its because our guys have to try to cover too long more than they aren't very good. If Minny can get the running game going, then start to mix in some play-action, it could be a long day for ISU. If ISU can stop your run & keep you in obvious passing situations, I think ISU could be successful on D.

The great part is that I really think this game is just too close to call with any level of confidence. Looking forward to Tempe!

No offense, but I see the Gophers winning this game by 7 to 10. I'm not sure how we do that since we seem to lost our offense, but based on SOS and our only common opponent, the Gophers just appear to be the stronger team. At first I was going to give ISU credit for finishing 3-5 in the Big 12, but as I looked through each B12 team's resume, it seemed rather apparent that the conference underperformed this year. Texas is going to lose by ten or more in the championship game. That's not to say the Big Ten is all that strong. I looked at the Sagarin ratings to see if my knee-jerk look at the conferences may be accurate, and the Big 12 ranked as the fifth best conference, and the Big Ten sixth. ISU played in the North, which means they had the luxury of playing Colorado and Kansas. Plus they missed 3 of the top 4 teams in the Big 12 South (Texas, Texas Tech, and Oklahoma). They played three non conference opponents with losing records, with Iowa being the only decent opponent on their OOC schedule.

On the flip-side, it appears that ISU improved as the season went along (as did the Big 12 North, as a whole). Also, when you look at the Sagarin ratings, the Gophers are #74 in the predictor value, while Iowa State is #75. That indicates a dead heat match-up and shows there may be a bit of homerism in my rough "who played whom and what was the score" analysis. Also, you seem to beat us slightly statistically for point differential and yard differential. This is where the SOS really comes into play, IMO.

FWIW, Iowa State is my favorite B12 school, so if we are to lose a game to someone in your conference, I would want it to be to you.

Games decided by 8 or Less:

Gophers: 4 wins (Syracuse, Air Force, Michigan State, South Dakota State)
2 losses (Wisconsin, Illinois)

Cyclones: 2 wins (Nebraska, Colorado)
2 losses (Kansas, Kansas State)

PFPG - MN - 21.583; RushY/G - 97.58; PassY/G - 198.33; Tot Y/G - 295.92
ISU - 21.083; Rush Y/G - 177.17; PassY/G - 182.33; Tot Y/G - 359.50

PAPG - MN 24.583; Rush YA/G - 146.67; Pass YA/G - 217.58; Tot YA/G - 364.25
ISU - 22.583; Rush YA/G - 169.33; Pass YA/G - 245.00; Tot YA/G - 415.33

Minnesota is typically outgained by about 68 yards per game, while ISU is typically outgained by 56 yards per game.

I just have a hard time believing anyone cares...

Irrevelant matchup in my eyes, when's the last time that anyone actually gave a *&^!#*&^!#*&^!#*&^!# about the cyclones in any sport, thats my question?

It's irrelevant unless you have an eye to the future. There will be much to see. I'm extrememly interested if they can put together an offensive game plan they can actually execute with a month and fifteen practices to prepare.

Well, seeing as we've been a 2 seed in the NCAA tournament twice this decade...

No offense taken hyaluronic. Most Gopher fans expect a small Gopher victory & most Cyclone fans expect a small ISU victory. That's why, even though the bowl is not top tier bowl, its a pretty interesting match up.

I think that the team that can establish a run game will come out on top.

I'm sure that if I think about it for about ten years, I can maybe come up with a reason to arch an eyebrow, clench my fist, shake it rapidly and raise my voice by about three decibels and say "Ooooooh! Iowa State. I mildly dislike them. (I can't even get my mild dislike up to where it warrants an exclamation point.)"

Seriously. Good school from which a number of my friends, family, and acquaintances have graduated.

Good luck to all sides in this one.

Thats how I feel about U of Minnesota. I disliked the Gophs in high school, as my buddies gave me a lot of crap for being Iowan. After my cousin moved to Dinkytown, and we went to a few concerts at Northrop, I decided it was a cool place, and a neat campus. Nothing but respect since.

I'll go out on a limb and say Minnesota wins by about 11ty billion.

Who doesn't hate Iowa State? There are so many reasons to hate them:

1) Lutefisk was invented at an Iowa State biological weapons laboratory. When it was deemed to be to dangerous to handle, it was marketed as a traditional Christmas food.

2) It has been alleged (admittedly, by me) that it is a ritual at Iows State to kick puppies.

3) Iowa State University is an anagram for "U: Is it very sane to wait?"

4) No one has ever proven they are not cannibals.

5) The Cylons nearly wiped out all of humanity, now it's revenge.

6) Remember when someone stole your french fries? It was them.

i don't know about the stats. our scoring defenses are pretty much a wash. minnesota in the 50's, isu in the 70's. i would say our pass defense has been better as the season went along, especially with our safety's playing at the level they do. if minnesota throws short passes less than 10 yards, they will have a shot at moving the ball consistently, but if they go deeper than that, they run the risk of our safety's crushing someone or taking the ball away. offensively for isu, the receivers need to get separation, if they can do that, they can move the ball further than the minnesota 40 or 30 yard line (a big problem for isu in the regular season). i think both teams can probably run the ball to get 4 yards when needed, so i think it comes down to the passing game on offense and defense. either way i agree with you, it should be a very good game, and i'm getting more excited as it gets closer. i just hope that i'm not to drunk to watch it closely being new years eve.
