Which local sport is missing from this story?

I know many here accuse the Strib of disrespecting Gopher football. Even I have to admit they made a glaring ommission here, especially given the title of the piece.

That's just frustrating to read. The frickin timberwolves and USA soccer are among the major teams with hopeful futures, but not even a hint of gopher football. Nice, yet another example of why I will never purchase a star tribune newspaper.

I dont see why you can be so mad at this article. The Timberwolves seem to have a very good rebuilding plan in process and getting those two peices would be huge. The World Cup is the biggest event in the world, and the US is finally a contender. The Gopher football team is not expected to compete for a Big Ten title this year, so what could they say about them? I am a huge Gopher fan, but you are reaching to say this is why you will never purchase their paper.

The entire is basically a farce of unrealistic best-case scenerios for all the local teams. There's no reason not to include Gopher football. It's essentially like saying 'you're so irrelevant we didn't include you, just like the Lynx.' At this point, far more people care about Gopher football then the Timberwolves. The article should have been expanded 3 sentences to include them.

I love U.S. Soccer, but they have less of a chance to win the World Cup than the Gophers do of winning the Big Ten. Due to a relative easy group, they'll make it to the knckout stages, but there is far, far too much talent internationally for them to make it beoynd the quarterfinals. A contender they are not.

I admit to not knowing too much about US soccer, but didn't we just have a huge run in a world tournament, knocking off some perennial contenders?

The Timberwolves have nowhere to go but up, I suppose. I very rarely hear anyone talking about the Timberwolves at all.

They beat Spain, then ranked #1 in the world, in the Confederation's Cup last year to reach the finals, where they lost to Brazil. While it was a great win, the Confederation's Cup is a second-tier tournament (it's not on par with the World Cup) and it would take an amazing run of luck for the U.S. to win. FWIW, odds makers have the U.S. at 67-1 to win the World Cup (putting them about middle of the pack), giving them an approximately 1.5% chance to win, which I think is about right. I'd be thrilled if the U.S. could make it to the quarterfinals.

And now I'm done talking soccer in the football board. PM me if anyone would like to discuss it on the OT board.

When the wolves are good they have more juice than the FB team. I would equate the western conference finals run to a 10-3 FB season and nationally ranked FB season, and the wolves had much more juice at those points. The FB team needs a Rose Bowl to capture the hearts of the city.
