Sometimes -- no, make that quite often -- I wonder if Grandpa Sid ever concerns himself with being accurate in his reporting. A few days ago he reported a Gopher basketball ticket "would remain at $21 per game despite there being two extra games next season".

One problem with that statement. For a single ticket this season it is $660, and that excludes any preferred seating charges. There are 21 home games in 2011-12, including exhibitions. Evidently Sid struggles with math. Hey Sid, 660 divided by 21 = $31.43, not $21 per ticket.

Don't let facts or common sense get in the way. It's sid we are talking about.

Touche. You'd think I'd know by now that Sid has a teensy weensy problem with accuracy in reporting.

Ya, but no way that someone at the Trib doesn't have the job of essentially writing Sid's column for him now after he has stuck his recorder in front of whomever he's interviewing. You would think that person would be more clued in. How many conversations do you think there have been at the paper and WCCO over how to handle Sid and put him out? A few, I'll bet. Having nursed both of my parents who were close to Sid's age and seeing the shape they were in, I have a lot of admiration for the man and the fact that he continues to try to do his job. But eventually someone is going to have to tell him he can't do it anymore. He's going from being an institution to the relative nobody knows quite what to do with.

I probably am too hard on Sid. I do respect his work ethic.

But like you say, if he's going to continue writing his column the Strib should at least have an editor who has some clue about what Sid is writing. Facts should be checked, not assumed. The opinion of a columnist is one thing, but the number of factual errors that occur in his columns is inexcusable for a major-market newspaper. It's been going on for a long, long time.

Sometimes it is just funny. You would think by now the Trib. would have someone on the staff to edit Sid's column

SS, for the past several years, the Athletic Dept has priced the 2 exhibition games at half price for season ticket holders; therefore 2 exhibition games are equivalent to 1 regular game.

$660 divided by 20 = $33.00 per game, a nice round number (but way overpriced especially for NC games when considering single game ticket demand).

Sid is about 35 years past his prime. It was real funny at the HS coaching clinic when he said hi to someone, not realizing it wasn't who he thought. Real awkward. Real funny. Maybe you had to be there.

Gopher Basketball Tickets

Sid could also be quoting a staff ticket price. University of Minnesota staff can buy season tickets at a reduced price, so perhaps the exhibition games at a staff price would bill out at $21.00/ticket.

The staff discount is only on season tickets generally and is 20% for any sport, so those numbers don't work out either.

The staff rate this year is listed at $527 (averaging $25.10 per ticket), so Sid would still be inaccurate by more than $4.
