....the first thing that comes to mind is "black bear."

"According to The Clarion-Ledger, the Rebel Mascot Selection Committee announced Thursday that the Rebel Black Bear will be the school's new mascot.

The Rebel Black Bear was selected after an online vote held over the past week between the bear, the Rebel Land Shark and the Rebel Hotty Toddy."

As nice as it is to see the Twins' TC wearing a suit:

I think they're really missing out on something special with "Rebel Hotty Toddy:"

Should have been Admiral Ackbar. That would have been the coolest thing evar.

What a lame mascot.

Adm. Ackbar totally got the shaft.

Seriously, its a slightly meaner looking version of TC. Maybe its an environmental education thing (mostly kidding here)? After all, "In the past, a large population of black bears were found throughout the State of Mississippi. Today, there are only about 50-100 black bears left." (see here)

A teachable moment

The University of Mississippi has it figure out when it comes to tailgating and the U is missing a huge opportunity to build community spirit (big surprise).

Dr. Lloyd and I took our show on the road to Ole Miss and had the pleasure of visiting The Grove. Tailgating right in the heart of campus! That's what I'm talkin' about...

Imagine if the U would let folks tailgate on Northrup Mall! No cars... you have to pack in your gear or drop off near by and park in a ramp. That's "The Grove". We have a perfect location here and we're just pissing it away...

Can I cast my vote for Rebel Land Shark?

1. Agreed, pretty lame, I hate when a mascot doesn't match the team nickname. The Twins missed a good opportunity to be different and have 2 mascots, but instead it's a bear.

2. I would love if we did a home and home with Ole Miss, that would be a fun trip.

Maybe they couldn't get the rights to Cletus from Matt Groening.

With you on this one Tipsy. I've been behind this idea for a while. It could even be a chance for the U to make some good money (and we know the U loves their revenue streams). In addition to the "drop off/set up method" they could offer Vandy style tailgating where you pay the university for a tailgate spot. But you get more than just the spot...The university provides the tent, table, and chairs plus they set it up/tear it down in the same location each week. You can also have the university cater your food for an additional fee. This might appeal to the older, richer crowd too since there is shuttle service right at Coffmann and the LRT will be running there in a few seasons.

Should have dropped the word "rebel" from the name of the mascot all together. Wasn't the whole point of the change to remove all civil war references? Still boarderline offensive IMO.

I'd go with a Confederate General, after all.....that is why they have that nickname in the first place.
Either change the whole name, don't have a mascot, or leave the mascot as it was. Embrace your racist heritage Mississippi!

Keeping the Rebels name is the only reason Oxford isn't trying to secede from the rest of Mississippi right now. :)

This was always an "image" thing and the plantation owner rebel was a bigger problem than the name.

If I am negative recruiting against Mississippi to a black player, that Rebel name would be a major sticking point. "If they are still glorifying their racist history, do you really think they will care about you other than using you to win some games for themselves"
Something like that. And it is not a shot at the coaching staff that the player would be getting to know. It is a shot at the community they would be entering.
