The coaches feel that Adam Weber gives us our best of getting a win, and therefore he gets the nod to start all games. If this was not true, you have to think that Horton would have started someone else after Brewster got axed. After all, he is the QB coach.

I'm perfectly fine with Weber starting games on that philosophy, however, what's the point in having a 5th year senior continue to get minutes (mainly in "garbage time") over a sophmore and RS Fresh who likely will be running the offense next year?

We are no longer capable of becoming bowl eligible. We are also entering a stretch of games where we will likely (I'm hoping otherwise) face a two to three TD defecit for a decent portion of the game. Both Horton and Weber will not be around next year, so it is time for them to put their short-term gains aside and be great leaders by giving others more prominent roles in preparation for their coming absence.

If the score is 35-0 at half this weekend, would you rather watch a Weber run offense pull within 21-14 pts against OSU's 2nd or 3rd string defense, or watch Gray/Alipate take the helm regardless if they score or not?

You aren't going to get a lot of people arguing with you here.

Brewster continued to play Weber to make the scores closer. We'll see if Horton continues this theme.

I have a feeling we will see more than 1 QB this week. Unless OSU lays an egg.

We saw how the booing affected maturi... maybe a gray chant will get the ball moving with horton? I don't think Horton knows fans don't give a Sh!t about passing records and just want some sort of excitement over these next few weeks.

You guys are asking the coaches to play for the future. Why would they do that? None of them are going to be around for the future, unless they go on a low winning streak. The only way to do that is by playing the best player at each position. The coaches are using this time to sharpen their resume as well, they want to be able to show improvement in their respective positions on the team to a future employer. The U has basically hired a temp service to come in and run the office for a short period of time, they aren't going to do any sort of mid-range planning. They are going to be focused on the here and now.

Yeah, I'm just baffeled by the prospect of having Weber play the rest of the way. Horton said he's a gambler, so why not gamble on an unproven commodity? After all, "what are they going to do, fire me again?" I hope he realizes that putting in Gray will keep butts in the seats after half outside of a close game, but if not, you can count on me joining in the "Put in Gray" chant.

Why would the current coaches care about next year?

Exactly. When I see a post like this I wonder "What's the point?" of getting worked up over this when the answer seems quite plain.

I agree to a certain extent, but it's not like they are an external group brought in. They have been here all year. Sure, Horton is making the calls now as HC, and a couple of the others have taken a bit more responsibility, but any future employer is going to ask the followup question of what they did the last couple weeks that they weren't doing the previous 8+ weeks to get better results.

They are charged with trying to put the program in a better position to win games. That's fine if Weber starts games and stays in if we are right there. I'd love to see us win out. My confusion lies in why it is better to keep Weber in after the outcome of the game has essentially been decided?

I believe they are charged with trying to win games now. They can't prepare players for next year, no one knows what that will look like for a thousand different reasons. What will the offense and defensive systems look like? Who will transfer? Etc., etc., etc.

At this point there is no tomorrow (next year) there is only today. If Horton can show a big improvement with Weber for a full season compared to last year doesn't that make him a good candidate for a QB coach position? Same for the O-line coach, receivers coach. I think improved technique via film is more important to the coaches now than wins or losses for their resume.

The staff has been as clear as they can about this without actually throwing individual players under the bus.

No one is prepared to step-in and take the reps. Even in garbage time.

They aren't prepared to step in and go against the other team's second or third string team? Really? So if Weber goes down, we just throw in the towel? If the coaches haven't prepared Gray or Alipate to run the most basic 3-5 plays in the playbook, then they should not be allowed a shot at another coaching position.

Also, what kind of a message do you want to send to your underclassmen and potential recruits? "Work hard and persevere so that during your senior season we can take away your starting job and give it to a young guy who you've already beaten out." I do think that they should be working in a few snaps a game for Gray and/or Alipate, but no way should they start over Weber unless there's an injury or something like that.

And all of this changes the fact that they think Weber should be playing how? Weber is playing. Probably time to come to terms with it. It'll make the last 4 games a little easier to sit through and you can save the folks around you in the stands the pain of sitting through your tortured screams of PLAY GRAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.

Like Silvio said this is a moot point

The current coaches in there position "owe the program" nothing as the head man was removed and almost all are likely to be non-renewed contract wise. This is pretty much a given, that they will play the players they think give them the best chance to win, and increase there chances to land jobs elsewhere. The same goes for the starting QB, the only self interest he would have at this point is doing the best job he can on film to look good, make plays and prepare a resume for perspective employers in the NFL. Everyone has an agenda and the future is definately not one of them. I do not blame them, this is what most would do in the same boat.

We could scream we want "So and So" until were blue in the face and it would mean little to nothing. The situation those in power are in, they have no incentive to change and not one incentive to try and develop things or players for future use. Just doesn't work that way when you replace the staff.
We already know what we say as fan's means very little, that's just how it is. It is all of the empty seats and season ticket holders that bought tickets and have not bothered to show up this year or sell the tickets, all of the empty gate that is telling the administration a change in the coaching staff was needed or there would be even bigger disaster tickets sales wise down the road.

Amen.

Weber should start and Weber should be in there as long as the outcome hasn't been decided. Garbage time isn't for padding your stats, it should be used to get your inexperienced players some game experience. Gray and Alipate can't handle it, fine. Adam Lueck's been around long enough to hand it off twice and then rifle a pick into a defensive lineman's chest.

The attendence in the student section is SO horrible...

they couldn't start any kind of chant. What a pathetic turn out of students against PSU.

Here is the other thing: there is NOT a back-up qb that is ready to go.

So, unless Mr. Weber is injured, it would be just too much to admit that the qb depth non-existent at this point in time. That sure is the way it looks and has looked for all three plus years that Brewster was in charge.

And...so it goes...

Thanks for the post Gopherlovin. Well said. I'm tired of the senior delusional Pro-Weber types on here. They have accepted the losing culture virus I guess. Some one needs to be taking snaps at least during Webers favorite junk time of the game. Who cares if Horton is looking for a job in the future. Only and idiot would hire him like you know who. He knows how to lose.... UNLV, Detroit, etc. So why would he change things up now??

Have I Got This Right?

What some of you guys are saying is...that in all time Gray has now been participating at the University of Minnesota the coaches have not been able to prepare him to start or enter a game as a quarterback? Have I got that right? Yet, he is our most highly recruited, highest ranked player in the program? Yet, somehow he is not good enough to replace Adam Weber who has won one game. If Weber was a sophomore would he still be starting?

And some of you guys are saying if I'm a remaining coach padding my resume and the team is 1 and 7...I'm sure not changing anything....this is the way we have always done it. I'm sorry, I wouldn't even think about hiring that guy. His resume goes in the circular file. I'd at least like someone who attempted to fix things. Someone who was bold enough to try and make things better.

Interview question: Why didn't you give Gray a chance? Better hope you get a job before he makes a difference next year or this year if Weber does get hurt and that's how Gray gets on the field and Gray plays really well.

My logic suggests making changes and returning to Weber if Gray fails miserably. This gives you a much better interview response to a 1 and 7 team than trudging along status quo to more losses showing no imagination or willingness to make a decision. Much less someone who right off just says: didn't you feel any responsibility to making the team better next year in the face of a lost season this year? I'd like to hire someone who's going to build a program. Someone who is going to make difficult decisions. Not someone who is going to hide behind....."Well, I know we are one and seven, but, but gosh we just always did it this way. I guess you are right it is not working, but gee, I really can't make any changes."

He's a senior. He has won one game. The job of a quarterback is to win games. Thank you, you did you your best. We are going in a different direction now.
