What's the deal tying us with Indiana on the trophy names

We were in Indiana's "tier" when the divisions were formed, so it only makes sense that we're tied to them for the trophy names.

Nationally both programs are perceived the same.

I think all of the new trophies have two names attached to them (one from each division?).

The Big Ten must collectively be taking stupid pills.

I don't like the duel names on trophies.

Butkus-Fitzgerald Linebacker of the year?
should only be the Butkus Linebacker of the year.

Nagurski-Woodson Defensive Player of the Year?
probably should be Woodson Defensive Player of the year - Nagurski was good both ways but Woodson did win the Heisman.

Nargurski played before the Heisman Trophy existed. The Nagurski award is given to the best Defensive player in the country.

The thing about these awards is are the names really going to withstand the test of time? Are these names so far above others that we would remember them in 40 years without these awards? Some of these names will be remembered in 100 years, trophy or not. Other names will just be an obscure name on a trophy.

Woodson did returns and stuff too, but he was a defensive player primarily. Not that I disagree with the naming on the national defensive player award.

They wouldn't name the conference award the same as the national one.

I know he was a good player but is Fitzgerald really deserving of being 1/2 the namesake of the linebacker trophy?

No. But Northwestern had to be included and the Zach Kustok QB award didn't seem right either. :D

Well, he did win both Nagurski and Bednarik Awards twice each (each given to the nation's best defensive player), helped his team lead the nation in scoring defense, and helped his team to a Rose Bowl.

Who would you replace him with?

I disagree

No. The Media felt the need to "honor" Northwestern's return to respectability. Nationally, those namings to those awards is rated right up there with Johnny Lattner winning the Heisman over Giel because the voters did not think the Heisman should go to player on a losing team.

This whole thing reeks of Maturi's involvement. Epic disaster by the Big 10. Not a fan of any of this crap.
