....I hope we can retain Horton. He's one guy that is getting it done, and he
has implemented an offense perfectly suited to the climate and local talent base.
It doesn't suck rushing for over 200 yards in each of the first two games.

I would hate to have to go through 3-4 OCs piddling around with finesse
passing games that get chewed up in the November winds of the Big 10.
Been there, done that. Give me smash-mouth.

I was just thinking the same thing. Horton has done a great job with the offense. If the next coach keeps Horton, then we have continuity with the offense, and the HC can focus on overhauling the defense. If we have to overhaul both the offense and the defense...

Of course, that means we can't drag our feet at the end of the season. Horton will be looking for a new job too, the faster we can get a new coach hired, the better the chance of keeping the offense intact.

We need a coach who has head coaching experience and a record of having a good defense.

I say add Tim Davis to that list too. I would imagine he's a big part of the current success on offense.

Let's take an optimistic look at this and asssume Brewster is a great recruiter (it's been debated at length before, but in my mind, we do not know yet, as his recruits have not had quite enough time to develop), which really is the primary role of a head coach at this level. From a coaching standpoint, Horton appears to be a solid OC (with a good OL coach), and I believe we finally have the right scheme to win in the Big 10. And, if Cosgrove's defense can perform closer, or better, than 2009 levels once the talent develops, is the program really that far away from being a contender? I know, this is a lot of optimism for the week following a loss to South Dakota, but for the sake of this discusion, let's view that game as an extreme outlier (tough to do, I know).

agreed

horton has been great. i hope it continues. it worries me that potential coaching candidates, e.g. Mike Leach, would want to come in and switch offensive schemes AGAIN!

I agree that Horton's offense is what we need. I have some concerns we'll run into some walls later this year when we see big defense fronts--- but, long term I think it's exactly what needs to be in place.

Mike Leach and June Jones terrify me in regards to the U. They would
fail miserably here...a Jim Wacker redo. They can succeed in other
places but would not here.

Horton has done well in two games, but my hunch is he won't look so good against actual decent opponents. In any case, it's way too early to judge him, unless you want to look at his past work which is solid but not spectacular. I think he was a good hire. We're finally running the kind of offense we should be running at Minnesota. We just need stability. I hope he stays around.

People are getting way too excited about Horton. Right now he is getting the benefit of a really experienced offense. Last year people were all excited about Cosgrove. Cosgrove last year had the benefit of an experienced defense. I'm not sold on Horton yet. Let's see how the offensive performs against USC.

It just seems last year we were Ok with Cosgrove, and hated fisch, now we like Horton. These two guys do all the heavy lifting that affects game day, yet we want the HC gone. We're psychotic.

A week ago, I thought my loaf of bread was perfectly good. Now I threw it out because it was moldy. Anything psychotic about that? Last year's offense with Fisch was bad. This year it seems pretty good. Last year the defense looked ok, but against USD we had the worst performance I've ever seen from a Gophers defense. Brewster made some mistakes in hiring coordinators, but you can only pass off blame to the coordinators for so long.

Just saying, Brews ultimately responsible, but I think we all know what happens on the field is the doing of the coordinators in this staff. One week we like Cos, the next he's the worst ever. this week we love Horton, who knows about next.

Personally I love the entire staff. I hope they succeed and we keep them all. But if a new sheriff rides into town, he'll bring his own deputies. If we could live in fantasy land Brew would slide over to recruiting coordinator and some local darling would take the reigns. I actually like fantasy land. Let's roll with that thought. It's funner than any of the others.

I think if last years defense had an offense that could keep them off the field some, I think they would have been really good. I think last years defense didn't get enough credit for how good they were. I know someone is going to bring up bad stats or games the defense played bad, but our offense couldn't stay on the field last year.

I like Horton too, but let's not jump the gun here. Its two games into the season, and we're talking about wanting to retain this guy?

His body of work with Minnesota is pretty small, and the defenses we've faced are not exactly juggernauts. Let's see how the offense performs against the Ohio States and Iowas of the world, before we talk this way.
