What would it take to wash the taste of this loss out of your mouth?

Put aside your 'fire Brewster' ire and all the hand-wringing for a moment, and realize that Brewster is going to lead this team through at least the remainder of this season. Deal with it. It may not be popular, but its reality.

So that said - what needs to be done in the remaining 10 games to at least salvage some respectability out of this season? Obviously, winning out is highly improbable, so lets keep that kind of talk out where it belongs, in fantasyland.

What's it going to take for Gopher fans to feel like this season was an improvement on the last? Or is it already not possible with this USD loss?

Regardless of whether Brewster is kept on for his 5th year or not, I'd say, winning 2 of the 3 trophy games, and beating NU, PU, and IL would cleanse my palatte of this horrid loss.

#1 At least two wins over USC, Bucky, PSU, OSU and Iowa.
#2 At least 6 wins overall.

The odds of both happening seem too remote to calculate.

Head scratcher or harbinger?

Kansas lost to NDSU, and then went out and beat ranked Georgia Tech. I don't think we're going to be feeling very good about this year, but it's possible that it might wind up better than it looks now. On the other hand, the total failure of the defense does hint that this could be more of a harbinger than a head scratcher. The offense should be OK, but the defense needs to get its act together really fast if we expect to beat NIU.

This is very close to what I am thinking but given the gravity of the SD loss... I would say at least three wins over USC, Bucky, PSU, OSU, and Iowa. As stated... VERY remote chance of that.

Part of the problem is this taste is somewhat familiar already given losses over teams like NDSU, Illinois last year, Iowa State, Northwestern '08, etc...

It would go a long way of getting the taste out of my mouth if they steal the USC game and beat NIU to get to 3-1 in the non-con like we all thought they would be.

Win Saturday, and you'll have the most bipolar fan base (and troll base) on Earth. I'll feel better. Confused, but better.

I would add a third, equally likely, condition: I start pooping diamonds by the end of the season.

7 wins and two of three trophy games (I guess the Bell can count). The standard took a jump with that loss.

I will go easy on Brewster. Bring back one trophy.

Just one trophy and this will wash the taste out of my mouth. It could be the ax or Floyd, but we must earn a marque win in the Big Ten this year.

A token victory over Northwestern, Illinois or Indiana is not good enough!

A win against USC would certainly change the perception and build some momemtum for the season. I think that would get the team back on track for a bowl game and some confidence going into the Big Ten play. A blowout would probably do the opposite.

I would add a bowl win to this list.

The bigger problem is that the USD loss under this scenario would continue to sting into the postseason since we'd end up in a "lesser" bowl because of it.

Cheering for pooping diamonds - that was great!

I think a couple of big wins at home would go a long way. I'm talking 2 of either USC, Ohio St, Penn St or Iowa.

I agree with this. Should this scenario play out, I think most fans would basically be back to where they were before the season started, wherever that may have been. They may not admit or believe it today (USD is still too fresh for many), but it is likely the case.

I would add a bowl win to this list.

Winning the bowl game cannot be a criteria. This would imply that if he loses the bowl game, we're going to fire him afterwards. This is a terrible idea. No program ever does this (well except for that one, ahem) because all of the best options will have already found jobs elsewhere. If Brewster is going to be fired it needs to be no later then the day after the Iowa game. Period. If Maturi dithers around until January again, that would be beyond a disaster.

Of these some are more likely to happen than others.

OSU is not happening. I would say 2 out of 3--USC comes to town half asleep, Penn State implodes offensively, Gophers get some karmic breaks in the Bucky game to make up for recent bizarre freak bad breaks (like the infamous botched bunt game)

Sorry folks, nothing can do it for me.

I have been built up (many times) only to be terribly disappointed by Brewster. I was a follower, but no more. Even if we were to go to the Rose Bowl, we would lose in such a devastating way that we could not rise from the ashes.

6 wins in the regular season plus a victory in the bowl game.

This would require either a USC win plus 3 BT wins or 4 BT wins - IMO as good or better than the predescessor whose name shall not be spoken for fear of taking this thread in a whole different direction.

I don't see it happening though.
