What will the best post-season results be for Gophers under Pitino?
*****You probably won't want to read if you don't like long posts*****
I'll be the most interested in watching how well he defends his home court advantage. The ooc portion so filled with cup cakes really won't say much. However, once conference play starts and with Maryland and Rutgers coming into the Conference in the future I would assume there will be at least 20 Conference Games...10 at home and 10 on the road. Hopefully, in the future, they will expand the Conference Game schedule. Wipe out a lot of those meaningless cup cake games and schedule a home and away round robin. So, if there are 14 teams in the conference, each team would play 13 home games and 13 road games in conference play.
To me the critical thing for Coach Pitino will be the HOME CONFERENCE GAME RECORD. How well will he, his staff and his players defend their home court advantage. In a 26 game conference schedule, 70% wins at home in conference play would give him roughly 9 to 10 wins. 80% would give him 10 to 11 wins. 90% would give him 11 to 12 wins....at home.IF he could win 30% or his road conference games that would give him 3 to 4 wins. 40% of his road games would give him 5 to 6 wins. 50% would give him 7 to 8 wins....on the road. You can play with the numbers. Most likely, with teams like Michigan, MSU, Ohio State, Illinois, wisky, Maryland and Indiana, coming into the BARN winning 4 or 5 of those games against those teams will take some pretty good games from our Gophers. So, that means that our local lads will need to really take care of business against the remaining Big Ten Teams when they come into the BARN. Purdue, Rutgers, PSU, Nebraska, Northwestern and iowa are pretty much teams that the Gophers would HAVE to beat at home to drastically improve on these near .500 figures in Big Ten play that everyone hates so much. So, if the Gophers could win 4 or 5 of those 6 games, coupled with 4 or 5 wins against the other tier of teams would give the Gophers an 8 to 10 win record out of 13 possible home game chances. That would equate to them winning between 70% and 80% of their conference home games. Probably a pretty darn good record against these types of teams. So, IF they could then win 30% to 40% of their conference road games that would add 3 to 6 more conference wins. So, an 11-15 to a 14-12 conference record would appear to be a likely mid-point type of performance for the near-term (2013/2014 season?)
It is that killer-row of Michigan, MSU, OSU, Indiana, Illinois, wisky and Maryland (Maryland has typically been a pretty good hoops program) that makes the B1G SO tough. You could probably replace wisky with Purdue historically. These teams have been tough on the Gophers at home...and away from home. If and when the B1G goes to a 26 game round robin home and away schedule, to improve above that .500 mark and the 7th through 14th place finish in the conference will take a LOT. Good luck. I am sure it can be done. I hope Coach Pitino is just the one to do it!So, Coach Pitino and his Gophers will need to realize that they have to defend the home court better than they have in the past and, home and away they will need to play well, with confidence and find ways to beat Northwestern, Nebraska, Penn State Rutgers, iowa and either wisky OR Purdue. It most likely will always be very tough sledding against Michigan, MSU, OSU, Indiana, Illinois, Maryland and either Purdue or wisky. It will take some drastic improvement to greatly improve on the .500 and below finishes of the current 12 program B1G and the former 10 program Big Ten Conference. That will be the challenge for Coach Pitino. Guard and defend the BARN better than has been the case in the overwhelming majority of the time in the past 50 years. It's a BIG job. Be HONEST above all else. Minnesota can NEVER afford to have a basketball scandal again. Now, let's see if that norwood can complete the fundraising needed to build massive and expensive and complete practice facilities in a timely fashion...
