What we haven’t seen yet or we have seen very little of so far...
Gopher I (or Maryland I) - I think we saw it 3 or 4 times last Saturday. I think they only ran it once in an earlier game.
Off tackle runs - even though they have two beasts at tackle spots. I thought these were our most successful running plays last year
Only a very few throws to Maye, Harbison, Jones, Wolitarsky. These guys have very good hands and the first three have good speed. Wolitarsky has GREAT hands, OK speed, and is big. The coaches say Jones and Wolitarsky are not ready yet. I think that is true but it is a sin of omission. Does anyone believe Jones and Wolitarsky haven’t learned even ONE route yet?
Passing - remember the Purdue game last year. Nelson carved up Purdue. Now I agree that Purdue was down after a tough loss to Ohio State the week before but that is only half of the story. Nelson was very accurate. As someone else pointed out, Leidner’s team won a national 7 on 7 passing competition so we know both QBs can fling it. The pass to Maye down the middle last Saturday couldn’t have been thrown better. The issue at this point for both QBs is recognizing defenses and getting protection. I fully expect one of the QBs to lose a game for us this year because of a mental mistake.
Berkley Edwards - I know the coaches said they may redshirt him but that implies they may not red shirt him. I think the best way to interpret that statement is that the coaches will red shirt him unless he can help the team win a game. The team lacks a speed back (Just like Mason recruited 6 QBs in one year so he could find 1 or 2 that could play, Kill is recruiting a lot of running backs to find a couple of speed backs) The team may not need a speed back this year, and if so, Edwards redshirts.
In short, there is a LOT of stuff we haven’t seen yet. Most opposing teams are not stupid (but never forget, every conference at any given time has a Brewster or two), they know the Gophers are playing it close to the vest but you can’t prepare for plays or players you haven’t seen
This team will finish 8-4 taking another step forward with a Big 10 win over Iowa
By the way, I don't think we will see anything new in the Iowa game. Iowa will not be able to run on us and their QB, while good, is no Frales. I think the new stuff will wait until Michigan.
