We now have 21 guys committed to the 2011 class. That leaves as many as eight spots available to be taken. I'm not sure we will get that many to sign that we have no hint of at this point. What do we expect to happen? Will Kill award any scholarships for walk-ons? Will he find some "diamonds in the rough" between now and April 1st? Can he hold any for after Spring or Fall camp to award? I don't know all the options, but it looks like there are many.

I would expect some walk-ons to get scholarships. Some people favor not rewarding the walk-ons, but that is very shortsighted, it kills the chances of getting good walk-ons in the future.

Walk ons will not get scholarshiped until after fall camp concludes in August. It is rare, if unheard of, to see a new coach scholarship a current walk-on he has not seen practice or play. Just the way it goes.

7 of Kills starters last year were originally walkons, including their RB Spann who destroyed our defense... Kill will definitely have a solid walk on program here, and some of them will earn scholarships down the road.

I'm still only seeing 20 commits on Rivals, but you follow this more closely than I do MaxyJR1.

I'm also confused as to whether we are in a "use 'em or lose 'em" situation as it relates to filling out the class. I know there is an overall scholarship limit and a limit as to how many recruits a team can sign to LOIs in a given year, but I get turned around as to how thing are counted. Well, enough about that.

I expect there will be a couple of surprises tomorrow, not that a 5-star (or 4-star) recruit is going to drop out of the sky and sign with us, but that a couple of relative unknowns--recruits we haven't really talked about--will show up on our commitment list.

I count Bjorklund in my numbers even though he wouldn't count toward 2011.

There are currently 20 verbals, not 21. This means we can sign as many as 10 more guys for a total of 30, but only 27 of those could enroll this spring or fall.

It ain't over till it is over, but Lemming on his radio show this morning ranking the Big Ten teams had the Gophers in at 9 or 10. With the Junior College transfers we can sign 5 more kids if we don't do the over sign based on academic casualties. Lets hope for some surprises tomorrow. What I'm pumped about is the current walk on program and the kids that have committed seem to really want to be Gophers

A scholarship is going to our new kicker, Chris Hawthorne.

I don't think Kill will fill up this close or give walk-ons scholarships (yet).

I'd guess he will just not use all of the scholarships at this signing period and save them for next year. We will have a small SR class again next year and saving those scholarships will allow us to keep our classes relatively even.

Regarding signing day surprises:

Are there any prospects that haven't totally eliminated the U and could possibly be one of these surprising signing-day commits?

Unfortunately there could be some not so pleasant surprises as well. I am hearing things about Jephette Matilus.

What school is making a late run for Jephete?

I've been looking forward to this day just like many of you. I can't wait to get to know our new coach a little bit better in person (hear him talk, possibly meet, answer questions, etc...). I've also never been to the DQ Banquet Room yet either so I'm ready to be amazed. The only negative is the cash bar this year but I'll bring a crow bar to pry my wallet open and welcome the new Gophers!

I'm just ready to get this recruiting season by us so he can focus on 2012. I wanna see Kill be able to do his thing for the whole year, not trying to quick hit some stuff.

I don't want to see them lose any more and I definitely do not want to see them lose him. Tomorrow does not seem to be shaping up to well to getting any surprises on the pleasant side, hate for it to be on the missing out side.

Here's my question.. When should we expect the signings to start to occur? I have to work in the evening (during the KFAN signing show and GL's bit), so I'm bumming a bit because I want to keep in the loop.

Probably around 8 am. A lot of times the students that are anxious will get to school and fax their LOIs in right away.

Another source for surprises

Remember Tyrone Carter? He was ready to sign with Florida and then the very last minute Florida said they had no schooly available. We were ready with open arms and he signed with us at the last minute. The rest is history.

I hope something like this happens again.

Yes, we need to be ready to grab any of the over-signing school's commits once those guys offers are pulled.

I wouldn't grab a guy just because a scholly was pulled from a school like Florida or Alabama. That player may not fit in Kill's system and we saw with Brewster that getting high star recruits does not mean success on the field.
