What is your reaction to Tubby contract?

Tough to form a good opinion on the extension without knowing any details

Like it - now coaching stability will help recruiting. Tubby has had to deal with too many injuries and too many kids making bad decisions and moving on. After the way they finished last year and with Mbakwe back they should have a solid year.....and then keep building from there.

I am somewhat inclined to go with the second option, but it's a little hard to say that Tubby has earned it through his success. He hasn't done too great here, but I'm of the opinion that it's more due to unfortunate circumstances than to Tubby simply being an incompetent coach. I'm still waiting for that one season, hopefully this upcoming one, where things actually go right for once, where we don't lose our all-conference forward in the 7th game of the season, where we don't lose both our first and second options at point guard in the beginning of Big Ten play. When we have a full squad, no significant injuries, no academic ineligibility, no mid-season transfers, I firmly believe that Tubby will take us where we all want to go. We haven't played a game with a full squad since losing to Texas in the 2009 NCAA Tournament. Two full seasons, missing at least one player in every game who was intended to play at the start of the season. By the end of last season, we had four forwards on the bench, injured: Mo, Ralph, Trevor, Oto.

This was our first season since 2008-09 that we didn't record 2 wins over top 10 teams, and we came very close against #6 MSU at the Barn (I put that loss on Tubby, we should have kept attacking instead of standing around and praying for the game to end before we lost the lead) and #10 Michigan in the Big Ten Tournament, friggin' Evan Smotrycz. Being able to hang with and beat the big boys on occasion reaffirms my belief that Tubby can do it.

At the present, things are looking up for our program, and I think losing Tubby would take away any upward momentum we might possess right now. Also, does anyone have any ideas as to what other coach would be doing a significantly better job right now given the same circumstances?

Consistency is a good thing for the U. We have gone through too many coaches who have no sense of direction and while he has had is fair share of injuries and bad luck. Tubby has continued to bring in recruits and win games.

I can definitely say....I'm not sure.

Due to unforeseen circumstances, we have played with a depleted roster the last couple of years,
but this years incoming class is not too impressive-two players that many say should be red-shirted.

The 2013 class is not showing much promise--yes I know it is early.

The 2014 class--well that's another subject.

I am looking forward to more years of "Fire Tubby" comments. It keeps my neck limber from all the head shaking.

Stan, I wish I could get what you are trying to do here. What is the point of this? Show some support and respect if you are a Gopher fan.

The way I see it, Teague and Kaler did their parts in creating stability within a program that has had little since Tubby's arrival, now he needs to do his part by quitting the practice of pitching his name to job openings, recruiting Big Ten talent, and keeping a cohesive unit that wants to stay with him for four years.

I am definitely in the "I expected more" camp. Yes, there have been injuries, but Tubby has to share at least some of the responsibility for all of the transfers, and for his coaching decisions (Hoffarber at PG?).
When you're a "Name" coach - when you've won a National Championship - the expectations go up, not down.

Bottom line - NCAA tournament victories under Tubby = 0. That has to change THIS YEAR!

I hope the contract buyout reduces significantly by year 3 of the contract, by then you are going to know the future base on the recruits that are signed, Jones, Vaughn, young Ellenson, etc. will all have made a decision and it will be fairly obvious what the future holds.

Otherwise it is okay, you need five years to recruit and keep the program stable, the run in the NIT restored some of my confidence that improvement is on the way.

First, I am glad it's done.

Second, no, he hasn't had the impact a lot of us hoped for, but I think there is still hope. It's the old catch 22. You need to win to start getting players to believe in what's happening here. The injuries and other set backs have prevented that. If all those "things" hadn't happened, we would have been better and as a result, would have some better recruiting options.

Really hoping this year lives up to expectations. If not, it could be a long haul.

Although I do not know the details of the extension, I like it because there is no way that Tubby had enough leverage to get much more than his market value (say, the LSU offer in April). The whole situation may not be ideal for us. Nonetheless, a sensible extension seems to be the best option we have had at this juncture. And the U got it done as I understand.

I just think he will have his best team this year. This team should be very good.

Reminds me of the Iran hostage crisis. Reagan replaces Carter; Iran releases hostages. Kaler/Teague replace Bruininks/Maturi; Tubby reaches contract extension agreement.

I agree about the program heading -- or at least pointing -- in the right direction. Getting Mbakwe is huge because it allows for some of the younger players to develop while the team wins. That's important. After Williams and Mbakwe leave, it is going to be the Hollins' team. Hopefully Walker plays again and Ellianson develops some consistent offense.
