I am somewhat inclined to go with the second option, but it's a little hard to say that Tubby has earned it through his success. He hasn't done too great here, but I'm of the opinion that it's more due to unfortunate circumstances than to Tubby simply being an incompetent coach. I'm still waiting for that one season, hopefully this upcoming one, where things actually go right for once, where we don't lose our all-conference forward in the 7th game of the season, where we don't lose both our first and second options at point guard in the beginning of Big Ten play. When we have a full squad, no significant injuries, no academic ineligibility, no mid-season transfers, I firmly believe that Tubby will take us where we all want to go. We haven't played a game with a full squad since losing to Texas in the 2009 NCAA Tournament. Two full seasons, missing at least one player in every game who was intended to play at the start of the season. By the end of last season, we had four forwards on the bench, injured: Mo, Ralph, Trevor, Oto.
This was our first season since 2008-09 that we didn't record 2 wins over top 10 teams, and we came very close against #6 MSU at the Barn (I put that loss on Tubby, we should have kept attacking instead of standing around and praying for the game to end before we lost the lead) and #10 Michigan in the Big Ten Tournament, friggin' Evan Smotrycz. Being able to hang with and beat the big boys on occasion reaffirms my belief that Tubby can do it.
At the present, things are looking up for our program, and I think losing Tubby would take away any upward momentum we might possess right now. Also, does anyone have any ideas as to what other coach would be doing a significantly better job right now given the same circumstances?
