24 total stars in ONE class. That's absolutely insane. I know people on here hate the star system because the Gophers haven't been inking that many high-level recruits lately, but you have to acknowledge what's going on in Columbus. I mean, TWO, 5-star guys in one class. That's how many Minnesota has had in its entire hoops history.

Imo It all starts with their football program money machine. All the more reason why we gotta get our program on the right track.

Thad and John Calipari have a lot in common. JMO

OSU is just turning into a gateway to the pros...Don't like it - but what can be done about it?

Interesting post.....where you stated the entire MN program has had two five star guys in the history of the program. I am wondering how many the gophers have actually had.

Kris Humphries
Joel Pryzbilla

Rick Richert ??
Sam Jacobsen ??

Unsure about how long they have been using the current rating system, but I know that Darryl Mitchell was very highly rated out of HS, as was Trent Tucker.

2008 - Two 4 Star, One 3 Star recruits.

2009 - One 5 Star, Two 4 Star, One 3 Star recruits.

2010 - Three 3 Star recruits.

2011 - Two 4 Star recruits.

Humphries and Pryzbilla were 5 Star recruits.

Matta won at Butler, Xavier, and Ohio State.

Calipari won at UMass, Memphis, and UK.

Pretty similar careers, actually.

Other than the facts that Matta's teams have never had anything vacated, never had any issues about eligibility after the fact that didn't lead to vacated games that could have (e.g., the Eric Bledsoe situation), and that Matta never landed any 5* recruits from a state other than states he's coached in, they have some similarities.

I'm talking strictly about W-ing at 3 different schools at varying levels - Mid-Major, High Major, and Best Of The Best programs.

Calipari and Matta have similar careers thus far. Both are superior recruiters whose W-L results are a little disappointing but still excellent overall.

Huh?

Calipari averages 28 wins a season and has won his conference title 12 of 17 seasons as a coach.
Thad Motta averages 26 wins a season and has won his conference title 6 of his 10 seasons as a coach.

Calipari is a cheat and the epitome of everything that is wrong with college bball, but his W-L record is impressive.

Both recruit at the highest level. But Calipari has only 2 FF and 0 NC. Matta only 1 FF and 0 NC.

Matta's a great recruiter but OSU was a sleeping giant. The only major conference school in a huge state with a ton of basketball talent and Indiana is down so they're getting some of the top kids from there. OSU is like Ill in that they should always have top 10-15 classes simply by getting say 3 of the top 5 players in state

Well yeah, you never talked about whether or not they were able to win a lot of championships. You said that there W-L records wasn't that impressive. That is dead wrong, they both pile up the wins at impressive rates.

They haven't been raking in the championships but they have been winning a ton of games.

Did you see the names on the list ahead of Calipari on the second list of coaches? All of them (except Billy Donovon) are legendary coaches (Izzo, Calhoun, Coach K, Pitino, Roy Williams), i'd say he'd amongst some pretty good names in that list (same with Motta).

It helps to have 6 players in the class, but yeah, still very impressive. It also helps to be Ohio State though, regardless of coach.

Given the Best Of The Best recruiting both have compiled, I'd expect better results.

Tubby averaged 26 W over 10 years at UK with good (not great) recruits most years. He had comparable NCAA results to either Matta or Calipari.

I haven't looked at this years class at OSU so I could be wrong, but I think most of his high level recruits are from the state of Ohio. That's a nice built in advantage. That state produces a lot of high level athletes in many sports...they have perfect demographics and OSU is definitely the big dog on the block. Hopefully they run into the same trap as our hockey team...although its much tougher to build a team in hockey. In basketball, the team with the best single player on the floor usually wins.

We had what? 17 stars last year? It doesn't always go as planned. In fact I'd say recruiting outcomes never go as planned.
