There are lots of "leaks" and "inside information." I am curious to see a list of things that we know for a fact.

We know that:
  • Joel Maturi and Dave Mona flew to San Diego
  • Brady Hoke told his team that he had interviewed for the Minnesota job
Are there any other facts we know?

Things seem to be coming fast and furious now. As of Saturday night, people here were indicating it was Hoke's job. By Sunday morning, it appeared he was completely out of the running. I am trying to refrain from anything at this point. There are so many factors changing, literally by the minute: Indiana job opens up, Miami... now Michigan? Meanwhile, new sources come on line all the time saying this coach, or that coach are "not interested" which hints at things reaching their conclusion. It will be nice to get this process in the rear view mirror.

Frankly, unless its in an accredited journal with a byline, I don't think it's worth $0.01. Tweets are worthless. As my neighbor who's an editor for the strib said, they won't put anything in print (or on their website) unless:

A)they have corroborating sources
B)its a single source and its unimpeachable (e.g. Bruininks or Maturi).

Remember that anyone posting anything on the internet has a motive. In this case it's either:

1- a journalist trying to get a scoop. And noone remembers the 10 breathless tweets you had that were BS if you get lucky and are the first to post XXX is the next Gopher coach

2- It's a coach or his agent either trying to save face, or leverage more jack out of his current employer

3- Its a booster, or maybe someone in the athletic dept, trying to build momentum for "his guy", or tear down some other candidate. That rumor about Hoke being a "B tier candidate" comes to mind

4- In some cases it may be an orchestrated leak from the athletic dept, either as a smokescreen or a trial balloon.

5- Given the amount of ineptitude in the past from Bierman, there could be a deep throat leaking stuff he shouldn't. If so, that person should get S-canned.

Overall though, I think Maturi and the search firm have done a good job keeping most of this below the radar. Wait until Michigan kicks dickrod to the curb. Remember what a monkeypooh fight their last coaching search was?

I was just thinking of posting the same question. Two facts that I would add to your list is that Fulmer said it wasn't a good fit and Bellotti has said he doesn't want to take a new job this year. Not sure there are any other real facts out there.

One thing I really been wondering about: Is there any confirmation at all from any reliable source that we actually talked to Calhoun or Edsall? I haven't seen anything believable, but I might have missed it.

Also, it's a subjective judgment on Maturi's part, so we don't know how factual it is, but in his letter last week he stated the search was going extremely well, they have an outstanding group of candidates and gopher donors will be proud of the new hire.

To be honest - a whole lot of nothing IMO

If Maturi pulls a great hire out of his hat - he is much more sneaky than we give him credit for.

This whole Mike Riley thing has me wondering. Could he be sick of playing second fiddle to the ducks out in Oregon and frustrated trying to recruit kids to Corvallis?

We know that Maturi's track-record does not fill us with confidence, but rather anxiety. Other then this we don't know much. But I have nightmares of Trestman and Chyst dancing in my head.

If there is any credence to the football scoop thread, Mullen and Golden would still be in the mix. My two favorites outside of Harbaugh and Patterson.

I agree... and if it takes a little smoke and mirrors, so be it, as long as we see the commitment by the U to get a proven or great coach.
As stated in his letter and referenced here on the hole, "an outstanding group of candidates" to me means that we are not 'settling' for a coach.
Gees, I know it is the Minnesotan in me, but I sure hope plan "b" is not what he pulls out of the hat!

Even this means nothing. Dennis Green always got the #1 guy on his draft-board even when he was drafting 20th (you believe that right?) I'm sure Maturi will sell us that he chose whoever it is (even if Trestman or Chryst) out of an 'outstanding group of candidates' and that he really preferred them to many of the names you saw in the rumor-mill.

Ha.. So true. "Ladies and Gentleman, I would like to announce your new football coach, our 7th choice, Mr..... "

I think Mike Riley is a great coach, but I think he is a Beaver lifer. They are down this year, but they will be back. When he has the players he can coach with anyone, all he needs is Phil Knight.
