On the KFAN post game show he said players were out of position, missed tackles, lacked effort. Young players and older players didn’t do their jobs. He will get it fixed.

He took blame for the loss.
(Not shocking, he's not going to name players).

Hinted some players are trying to do more than they should getting out of position.
Lot of missed tackles diving at ankles.

When you are diving at ankles, you are either slow getting to the right spot, or not in the right spot I would assume because it's hard to dive at ankles when you have someone in front of you.

He sounded noticeably down.

Thanks ... was interested if he made it real. Like others on here I am not a fan of all the fast talking salesmanship. If that is how he approached it I think he is on a better track.

Agree he sounded down. Said it was the worst game he’s been a part of in awhile. I think he was surprised by the game. He obviously didn’t have his team ready. Said inconsistency in all 3 phases and that’s what happens when you’re young (he prefaced that by saying I know people don’t want to hear it before he said young).

Must be tough to be this young when going against a deep veteran juggernaut like Illinois.

Fleck's line is getting a bit thread worn. "We're too young, we missed too many tackles, we didn't execute, we'll get it fixed, etc. In the Gopher's final two BIG games of 2017, we lost 0-39 and 0-31. In six BIG games this year, we have given up 42, 48, 30, 53, 31 and 55 points. The defensive pattern is plain. Yes, our DC is mainly responsible for the defense, but the HC must also assume the blame and quit making the same inane excuses over and over.

What do you want him to say?

Just write it down and maybe we can get him to read it verbatim.

I’d start by not saying “we have to play players who shouldn’t be playing” any more. Really, insulting your players instead of figuring out ways to help them succeed. Let’s start there. That is totally against the Farmer’s Alliance.

Exactly. Fleck is just as aware of the problems as all of us. He knows things need to be fixed and you can bet they are going to do everything possible to fix them.

He isn’t going to throw specific players or his coaches under the bus to the press so there really isn’t much he can say.

I will be surprised if Smith is here next season.

+1

At least if he would have said "we have coaches who are coaching who shouldn't be coaching," the grown men wouldn't feel as bad as these kids whom are trying their best.

After the Nebby game, IIRC, he said something along the line of “It is all on me. I am the one who chose to play a true freshman who isn’t ready and isn’t strong enough”. Yeah, he’d never throw Howden under the bus.

Ideally, something like "I'm really proud of the job are guys did to help us secure another big win." Of course, that also requires hin doing something different earlier in the day and in the week leading up to the game.
