Right now there appears to be great expectations about the direction of Gopher football under coach Kill. My guess is 90+% on here are very optimistic and feel that we will see significant improvement this year. With that in mind, I was thinking about what we might be missing and how we could end up struggling this year.

1. QB depth. Nelson should be really good by the time he's an upperclassman, but he's still only a true sophomore. If he struggles or gets injured we could be in a world of hurt. Shortell was never going to be a great QB in this system, but his transfer was still a big loss because of the depth he provided. If we're relying on Leidner, Foreman, and Streveler for an extended period of time, it could get ugly.

2. WR play. Who can get open and make plays downfield consistently? Engel, Fruechte, and DCT would have been 3rd WRs on a good passing team last year. Do we have someone that can step up and catch 40-50 balls this year? We need McDonald to get back on the team and be an outside threat.

3. O-line. Lots of potential and they have looked good against the weak B1G teams and Texas Tech, but they still need to get better. The turning point will be when we can rush the ball all game long against a good B1G team. The line is still relatively young with only one senior starter (E. Olson) and might still be a year away from prime time.

4. Stopping the run. We wore down and couldn't do it in the 2nd half in all of our B1G losses except NW. What will be different this year? Can the D-line learn to both rush the passer and contain the run? Who is our MLB? The fact that the top two guys on the depth chart have never played a minute of college football at the D-1 level might be the biggest cause for concern on the entire team.

5. Special teams. Since I've learned to never expect anything from a true freshman, my money is on Hawthorne kicking this year and Eldred punting. Neither instills a lot of confidence, so if they can both be average it should be a pleasant surprise.

6. Senior leadership. Good teams win with seniors, and we don't have many again. Hageman, Hill and Vereen will be the senior starters on Defense. Olson and Engel on offense.

If we can get good results in these 6 areas, the Gophers could surprise this year and make it to 8 wins. I still think 2014 is the year where it should all come together and we should see significant improvement with wins and losses.

I hope we have leads big enough in our non-conference games to let the back up QBs get some real game experience.

I think this is pretty accurate although I would rate QB depth and stopping the run 1 and 2. Nelson does look good and it appears the Leidner has come on as a backup, but if anything happens to one or both we could be in big trouble. I am not convinced our linebacking corps as it stands now will do well against the strong running teams it will face this Fall. I hope Wilson, Hill and surprises come through but it is a huge question mark.

Mottla, Shabazz, Manuel, and R. Johnson will all be starting or at least playing heavy minutes.

Mottla and Johnson may never play football again, yet alone start. Shabazz will play, but he's been behind Wells, Boddy, and Murray so far this spring. Bill Miller just called Manuel inconsistent and said he's looking forward to getting in Laster and Campbell, not the kind of statement that bodes well for a senior.

Wow...this is a negative thread.

This thread was was on shaky legs with this opening.

I wasn't aware that a torn ACL is career ending these days

When was this? That's certainly not good. I was really hoping Manuel/Edwards would make some strides over the offseason.

"It’s the other linebacker spot where the Gophers still need help. Senior James Manuel, a converted safety, has been playing there with the first-team defense.

“He needs to be more consistent,” Miller said. “He’s one of those that I’m referring to.”

And the same goes for Lamonte Edwards, a converted running back from Woodbury.

“He’s made some [plays], and he hasn’t made some,” Miller said. “And that’s that consistency part we’re talking about.”

De’Niro — I’m interested to see, but he is a freshman,” Claeys said.

The 6-5, 225-pound Campbell was a high school sprinter in Fort Myers, Fla. He signed out of Hutchinson (Kan.) Community College after de-committing from Kansas State, but wasn’t able to transfer in time for spring practice.

Claeys said Campbell is an “an awfully good junior college linebacker. I wish he was here in the spring. It didn’t work out that way, but if he has a good summer and shows he can play, then he will. And if that happens, our depth just got a lot better.”

I realize it's not saying much, but the expectations for this season are greater than probably any year since 2005.

None of us may be alive tomorrow. It's possible. There is no reason to think that both won't be ready to go in the fall. Their injuries were not that serious and will be almost a year behind them by fall camp.

(P.S. Your original post was about lacking "senior leadership". You can be a leader without being able to play, or to play at 100%. They will both be seniors and be here whether they can play or not.)

Last time I checked, a torn ACL and broken leg are pretty serious. And I don't know how much senior leadership the team gets from 3 JUCO transfers who have been in Minnesota for 8 months.

Yep...and most athletes come back from those injuries in about 9 months. Which should be right about July-August. Ready for fall camp. I understand being skeptical of all the hype, but its not like these guys had injuries that aren't fairly standard issue to come back from as a football player.

Word is McDonald is already back working with the coaches, not the team because he isn't currently enrolled in classes. But he's been at a few spring practices. If he stays out of trouble this summer, he will be back for the season.
