What can be done about the running game?

I just feel no confidence when our QB lines up under center. With the exception of an odd game here and there, it's been this way for a few years.
What can be done, if anything, to make it better? Please no sarcastic replies. I really am curious to read some serious suggestions.

They need to run more misdirection plays. They ran one to Moulton and it went for 13 yards. Our offensive line is not good enough to block one on one let alone 8 in the box. run the pitch/option series, quick pitch to long side of the field. They need to create space by spreading them out.

If Q can gain some confidence and complete some play action passes on first down, they can run more on second down and keep defenses more off balance. THis will prevent them from loading up the box. If you threaten with the run or pass on any down, it is more difficult for defenses to scheme against you by putting 8-9 in the box.

i do think, however, that the running game will improve some as the year goes on as this line gains some experience together. While their best years are ahead of them, they still have the potential to be fairly good this year once they get a few more games under their belts.

I don't have a solution for the running game. But I would like to see some I formation when its 1st and goal from the 2.

An effective, at least 60% completion of passes will keep defenses honest. Until that happens they will load up the box and dare the passing game to beat them. As far as o-line experience, isn't the center and both guards seniors?

There is only one man who can fix our running game: Tim Davis.

Yes, but only one of those seniors has any significant experience, and as a unit, they have not played together enough to iron out the kinks.

It all starts with a good OL, and MN does not have that right now, and has not for a few years...

Yep, the OLine is really going to have to start opening some holes and our RBs are going to have to start making a few plays. If you watch WI, they almost predicate their offense on their RB making the first guy miss and you almost never see that here. Our OLine hasn't been good, but our running backs haven't been very good either.

As someone else said, our OL isn't good enough to beat 8 man fronts, we need to draw the safety out. They should have been going at McKnight all game (almost like USC did with Woods) until we forced them to pull a safety out. Until we pass better, we will never run effectively.

Disagree on Wisconsin

Their offense is predicated on that their o-line can dominate the line of scrimage. That their rb's can make someone miss is an added bonus. Most of the time that ,making someone miss, comes after they are through a hole untouched.

Because of this reputation, big time running backs chose Wisconsin because they commit to running the ball and they have a great o-line.

This!

When you need one yard you don't have your running back line-up seven yards behind the center with the QB in the shotgun. Gray under center and fall forward for one yard-pretty simple stuff.

Absolutely, they have a dominant offensive line. However, they expect their RB's to make the first person miss (I realize everyone hopes this happens). It is why they still run the bll effectively with 8 even 9 man fronts.
