Hey long time lurker, Gopher season ticket holder and fan of both Gophers and the Dogs. Love reading everyones posts and discussions, never really compelled to post but thought this would spark at least an interesting debate. Ok, I know all the arguments... never coached a BCS program, it's a big jump from D-II to the Big Ten. But I do know from watching UMD football, Nielson can flat out coach and his teams perform like a freakin machine... Won A National Championship and has a perfect season going again this year.

Oh yeah, that would create a splash alright. I can't wait for him to recruit the Duluth pipeline. He's probably a nice guy, but no thanks.

Here's the other thread on this started today (it got pushed pretty far down the first page so not surprised you missed it): http://www.forums.gopherhole.com/boards/showthread.php?t=21935

Reposting what I said in that thread:
Damn good D-II football coach? There is nothing that says that translates immediately to the BCS D-I level. How is it that this guy is worthy of coaching in the Big Ten but hasn't even had a stint at the FCS level? Can you name one other coach that has jumped directly from D-II to BCS conference coaching and succeeded? To quote FBT: "Even the aforementioned Brian Kelly – widely regarded as one of the better college football coaches and brightest offensive minds – could only leverage himself into the Central Michigan job after two consecutive D2 titles, let alone a BCS conference gig like some are suggesting with Nielson."

He seems like a great coach for the Bulldogs. But to call this a reach would be being polite. This is an important hire and the U can't take a flyer on a guy who hasn't even worked at the FCS level.
