per the West Central Tribune:

As of now, we are just days away from the start of the Gopher football season. New head coach P.J. Fleck has made a bold statement: "We came here to be elite!"

There was a time when Gopher football was elite; winning national championships. But most of us remember mostly when they were one of the worst teams in college football. Eventually, they moved up to mediocre, but they were still prone to lose, especially to Michigan and Ohio State.

In the past several years, we have had good coaches who helped the Gophers become a winning team again. Some years, they won bowl games.

One thing concerns me: Some previous coaches have been quick to make bold statements, but were unable to deliver. At least Jerry Kill had the right idea: Don't make promises you can't keep.

This is Fleck's first season with the Gophers. It's difficult for a coach to have a winning season their first year, but it can be done. We'll have to wait and see.
