We hired a PR specialist with deep ties to the U and their alumni base to serve as special assistant to the AD. Am I the only one that is thinking fundraising?

Isn't that spelled "ass-istant" when it comes to blowhard Mona?

I heard all he will do is screen Maturi's phone calls and explain things to him, like he does for Sid on Sundays.
 

There is nothing wrong with this. Dave Mona is a PR specialist who has deep U of M ties. I am sure he can help the "U" in many ways and I am surprised he has not been involved until now. I'm sure he will help in fundraising and giving positive PR to our new coach. People give it a chance.
 

Very confused about the freakout. Do all of you think Mona is the new search committee guy or something? :confused:

JHC! It's the equivalent of kids stomping their feet, holding their breathe, and yelling that they don't love you. The Monas have deeper ties and have given more to the University than anybody throwing a hissy fit over this.

Understands University athletics? Check. Understands Minnesota? Check. Is a Public Relations professional? Check.

Sounds like the kind of guy we need around right now.

This is a very good move. Dave is as connected and respected as any in Minnesota when it comes to PR which is what we can use right now. Idiots fear intelligence and can only mock it, there are dozens of examples all over this board.

Dave Mona, a longtime face in Gophers athletics, was hired as a “special assistant” to athletic director Joel Maturi, the athletic department announced Tuesday.

Despite the timing, Mona won't be primarily helping with the coaching search. A public relations mogul who founded the Midwest's largest public relations firm, Weber-Shandwick, he'll help with courting major donors, strengthening community ties and various other marketing projects.

Mona is plenty familiar with the University and Gophers sports in particular, having served as the color analyst for Gophers football radio broadcasts for the past 13 years and co-hosted the Sports Huddle show with Sid Hartman on WCCO Radio for the past 29. Both he and his wife, Linda, have chaired the University's Alumni Association, and both helped lead the fundraising for TCF Bank Stadium.

Easy, if it has Maturi's name connected to it some people have a Pavlovian response of 'Then it MUST be a bad idea".
 




I know this is the football board but if you have been paying attention there's been rumors that Tubby is going to get the practice facility he wants. Dave Mona gets hired to fund raise. A coincicidence? I don't think so.

Hire a professional pr/media/gopher fund raiser who along with his wife bleed maroon and gold and then bitch about that.

Makes perfect sense to me.

...very astute. That was exactly what I was thinking when I posted. Also didn't know he had such longstanding ties to the U. I recind my earlier comment.
