Well at least we aren't Northwestern fans

I couldn't imagine being a NW fan, they torture their fans it seems like every with the hope of making the dance

They're not dead yet, though. 'Cats need to find a way to win in Iowa City, which won't be easy. Gophers likely will play the winner of that game in the 7/10 game next Thursday.

I don't think I'd feel too bad being a NW fan:

Basketball Graduation Rates: Big 10
Northwestern 92%
Illinois 80%
Wisconsin 78%
Penn St. 67%
Purdue 64%
Ohio St. 60%
Iowa 60%
Michigan St. 58%
Indiana 57%
Michigan 44%
Minnesota 44%

Thanks. That's good stuff.

Not surprised to see UConn at the bottom of the barrel in the Big East.

Yes, I see my error. I copied the link from the 2011 edition of the analysis but posted the table from the 2010. Sorry. The rankings are about the same. True, too, that many, maybe most as you suggest, fans value on-court success over academic achievement. I think that's a heckuva shame but I realize I'm in the minority. I find it humbling to read a stinging paragraph like this one that followed the 2010 table: "In just two years, Purdue's graduation rate has fallen from 91%, which was then the best in the conference, down to 64%. Minnesota, the Big 10's perennial bottom-dweller, has surprising company at the bottom, as Michigan has slipped into a tie for last place. Maybe somebody should check to see whether Michigan's basketball players, like its football players, are spending too much time at practice and not enough time in class."
To be near the bottom of the conference in both basketball wins and graduation rate suggests that our recruiting strategy is not working in either area.

You make good points. For the most part, no one cares about graduation rates (at least at the big schools) as long as their team is winning. But when the program is struggling or losing, that's when administrators, AD's, etc., will use the grad rates (if poor) as ammo to fire a coach they want to get rid of. I suspect that will become the case at UConn if Calhoun doesn't step aside gracefully (which I don't think would be his nature).

It's the urban campus. :) Too many distractions for the students.

Maybe we should build a state of the art homework facility.

In all seriousness, I would like to see us get some better grades. I know grades won't translate directly to on court success, but I think a lot of the attributes that it takes to succeed in the classroom lead to the kind of effort and teamwork that allow teams to play better than the sum of their parts.

My guess (and please correct me if I am wrong) is that the U of M graduation rate is so low because, well, Royce, Devoe, Cobbs, Carter, and Iverson did not graduate. When that many guys don't graduate, that makes your graduation number look very bad (assuming they are counted in that statistic)

Sounds like a system in need of some serious reforms.

I thought that if you were in good academic standing when you transferred, there would be no negative effect on APR. Now, if you can be in bad academic standing, go pro, and have no impact, I'd have an argument with that. But I'd guess that if all those guys were making grades when they left, they wouldn't be counted.

I did not know that. I thought they got hit regardless. Well that's kinda ridiculous.

“@JBBauer612: @JayBilas APR "hit" on a transfer is nil if school is at 1000; otherwise, it's merely mathematically dilutive.”
