Just like I said in the other thread. This years team is #20-25 and not at all better than that.

We’ll finish 4th or 5th in the conf depending how we do against Purdue. We can’t hang with the good teams and will take care of the rest.

Don’t deserve to host a first round.

They don’t deserve to make the tournament with how they’ve played and a coach who is a foolish mule.
 

It is sad to see this once proud program in a free fall. I am not sure they will ever get back to being a power. Just like in women's hockey it is embarrassing to be overtaken by Wisconsin.

We didn't drop so that's good.

PSU dropped 11 for their loss to MSU but Purdue only dropped 3 for their loss to Illinois? Interesting...

It’s 32 DI conf champions automatically and then 32 at-large?

Hard to say precisely because a fair number of those 32 conf champs will be in the top RPI, but then a decent number won’t be.

On average, do the top 40 RPI make it? Top 35? 45?
 

I think it's usually around top 50, but the committee doesn't just use RPI for selections, KPI is also being used this year along with other criteria.
 

Yeah I know it’s not automatic, just wondering what the average correlation is.

Guessing if we stay at 35 or so, they’ll eke in. Won’t host. Could easily lose to the host in the 2nd round.

This is how low a team can be ranked in RPI and still make the NCAA volleyball tournament as an at-large bid

We looked at the four at-large teams in each of the past five NCAA Division I women's volleyball tournaments (2013-17) with the lowest RPI rankings leading into the selection show to determine how low a team can be ranked in RPI and still make the NCAA tournament.

Strength of schedule stats are so weird. Purdue's SOS rank is #7; Minnesota's is #28. But the RPIs for their non-conference opponents are not what's causing that discrepancy: Purdue's - 10, 12, 20, 22, 24, 31, 52, 57, 65; Minnesota's - 2, 6, 8, 12, 17, 28, 55, 56.

Why Purdue's SOS rank is higher is because of the in-conference schedule. Purdue plays Rutgers (155), Michigan (185), and Iowa (226) once each, while the Gophers play those bottom-three teams twice each.

Sad. Gophers destroyed Ohio St. and drop two places in the RPI. I don't have a lot of faith in the RPI but that is what the NCAA uses.

RPI is strange indeed. Whatever the Gophers RPI is after the Illinois match, we will get an RPI boost simply by playing Nebraska, win or lose, because 50% of your RPI calculation is your opponents’ winning %, which will increase by virtue of us just playing the match.
 

Ohio State isn't good. That's why we won.

Iowa is terrible. That's why we won.


You don't "deserve" anything by going 3-0 over two not great teams.


The season basically comes down to the match vs Illinois. Let's see what happens when they play an actually decent team. Let's see them play that well and go 3-0. Would be nice for the fans, after everything that has happened this season.

My gut feeling is that the NCAA will send the Gophers to California to play Stanford in the first round. We will find out today at 5:00 pm CST on ESPN.
