14. Minnesota

Record: 2-1

Hi/Lo: 14/15

Change: +1

Last game: Win vs. Nevada, 27-0

Biggest win: vs. Rhode Island, 48-0

Nevada is a bad Mountain West team but Minnesota looked functional moving back up from the FCS win last week. The run game and the defense reigned supreme which is the formula for PJ Fleck’s team. Not sure what the ceiling is here, but the Gophers are a tough team that could get some momentum in Big Ten play.

I don't mind the prognosticators continuing to look at us as an also ran. Keeps external pressure off of the team, just bring your lunchpail to work all week and keep moving from game to game. Big game this week.

Record: 2-1

Breakdown: Nevada was in one-score games every week so far this season until they ran into Minnesota. The Gophers used 124 rushing yards and a pair of rushing touchdowns from Darius Taylor to key the win.

Meanwhile, Minnesota’s defense limited Nevada to just 172 yards of offense in the shutout and the Gophers forced three turnovers.

Minnesota can climb these ranks in a hurry if they find a win over the Hawkeyes next week. The Gophers are still waiting for a signature passing game from New Hampshire transfer Max Brosmer. Brosmer passed for just 165 yards in Minnesota’s season-opening loss against North Carolina and for just 191 against Nevada.

Joke: It has Wisconsin at 11. Right there swap positions. Minnesota at 11.

If Nebraska can be #5 in this ranking, then maybe split the difference. Gophers at 9 which the article has Illinois at 9.

Indy, MSU, Ill, Rutgers, Neb, PSU, Oregon, USC OSU all undefeated and should be ahead of us (that's already 9).

Of the 2-1s we've got Mich, WI, IA, MN, Wash. You could argue they should move down WI, IA, and Mich who are for some stupid reason ranked ahead of those undefeated teams in spite of very clear and obvious flaws, but there's no real justification that the Gophers leap frog the undefeated teams for losing to a P5 team and beating a horrible FBS team and an FCS team. 11 would be reasonable for MN (behind Mich, who lost to the #1 team in the country). There's no reason WI should be this high as without Van Dyke they'll be lucky to make a bowl game. They should still beat Purdue, but the rest are up for debate at this point.

The top couple teams are pretty easy to rank, the bottom teams are also pretty clear....the middle as usual is a jumbled mess and you could really move most of those teams up or down a handful of spots without much difficulty.

Tough to really know where teams are at because most haven't been tested much to this point. Now that conference play kicks into high gear it will become clear very quickly which teams are for real and which ones aren't.

Back-to-back shutouts against bad teams have helped the Golden Gophers get back on their feet after their season-opening loss to North Carolina. If the defense can come up big again in week four when Iowa comes to the Twin Cities, Minnesota could make things interesting against the Hawkeyes.
