The U has hired a Division One head football coach with a winning record. We act surprised that it's not Petersen or Hoke or an even bigger name.
We should have paid more attention to what other schools are doing. e.g.
Indiana is looking at Division I Offensive coordinators for their vacancy.
Colorado, which joins the PAC10, hires an NFL Coach (not a coordinator).
Do we really think the evidence out there shows us to be several plateaus above them? We may think that but I'm not sure anyone else does.
I think the coaching landscape is changing. Guy's like Petersen don't have to move to be well paid and why move when they're now getting national recognition where they are. And with the conferences realigning, a guy like Patterson moves to a BCS school without having to move. There are very few coaching jobs today that are considered so highly desirable that it's just assumed anyone you ask will move take the job. And like it or not, we're not one of them.
Obviously we were after Hoke. Did the $5M change his mind or is he thinking the Stanford job will open up shortly and he considers that more desirable. Or were his demands too great.
You have to have a lot of guts to take this job with the condition it's in knowing what the Big10 Division we're in looks like. Because we're going to expect you to win games in it.
Yes this is not a "Tubby Smith" type hire, and I'm sure Maturi is as surprised as we are at how undesirable others view this job. But none of the current programs that are excelling in the Big10 have coaches that were "sure things" when they were hired.
Good luck to you Coach Kill!
