Bring on a NEW AD and a new Coach in Flip. It appears that he will be fired by the Wizards. If the reports are true, I hope the New AD and president will consider Flip for this position.....He could energize the fan base, bring a NBA perspective, and can most importantly energize the Fan base and the Contributors to the Newly remodeled Williams Area/Practice Facility...... plus, he will Win in the Big ten...... This is not a new thought on this board, but I think it may become reality, and soon!

We F***ing get it dude.

If Tubby goes 0-18, I still wouldn't want Flip brought in. He'd HAVE to get good assistants that know how to recruit, because Flip has never had to do that.

Not that it would happen, but bring in Flip as the top assistant next year, get him accustomed to recruiting and the college game, and hand him the keys after Tubby's contract is up.

I'd think Saunders would have plenty of history and name-recognition to recruit as well as anyone can to UM.

Flip is big in MN. To the rest of the country, I'd guess he is the guy who got fired by the Wolves, Pistons, and soon to be the Wizards.

I've always liked Flip, but he isn't Phil Jackson. He'd make a very good assistant tho. IMO.

Name recognition doesn't recruit by itself. If that were so, Tubby would be getting 4 and 5 stars and the coach at providence wouldn't have signed 2 Top-20 recruits.

Compare and contrast; Iowa State is one of four D1 programs in the State of Iowa - Drake, Northern IA, IA and ISU. State population 3 million approximately (2.9 mil). ISU campus is in Ames, population under 100,000. It is farm country. It is an engineering school. But it has state financing and corporate donors, largely in the aerospace industry. What does it have that MN doesn't? A newish arena and practice facility. That is why Hoiberg can go down there and compete in the recruiting process. He doesn't have weather, urban campus, sophisticated/international student body or championship rings. Bring in Flip or a top mid-major coach without the practice facilities in MN, you won't see marked improvement. Let's be realistic.

Can someone explain why Flip would be a better hire than any other top college assistant or mid-level coach? How have the NBA teams he has coached improved due to him (and not to KG?). Detroit? Anyone notice that he has a bunch of plays but no system? Like Phil as a Gopher but ...

The argument for Flip is that his NBA pedigree would be attractive to kids. If Flip brings in a former NBA player as an assistant, that would further the idea that going to play for Minnesota/Flip would get a recruit ready for the league. The name value to recruits ( even Minnesotans who probably wouldn't even remember Flip as the Wolves coach) would be "NBA" and not "Flip Saunders". You have to have something to sell and the experience of coaching guys like KG, Steph, Chauncey Billups, John Wall, etc would be attractive to kids.

One interesting stat about this Wizards team Flip is coaching is that they are incredibly young. I believe I saw a stat on NBA TV where the average of their players was like 21.8 years old which seems impossible. Working with a group of kids that young (and more entitled than the college kids because they already are walking around with big money) would seem to be good preparation for coaching a college team.

I am not sure Flip is my first choice, or even in my top 5, but I certainly wouldn't hate to see him be the next coach of the Gophers.

If the wizzards can flip the we could hire a guy 56 year old guy who has been FIRED from every head coaching gig he has ever had just what the gophs need

The job requires a proven recruiter and it's a young man's gig.

He also doesn't have four or five pro sports teams and a major college hockey program to compete with for media and fan attention.

You are totally full of $hit. He coached at Golden Valley Community College and coached them to several Community College tournaments until the College closed. Be accurate in your accusations please.

I heard Spencer tolikson yesterday in ESPN1500 talk in depth about this. He said that Flip would be a great coach and that Ryan Saunders would also be on the staff. He can recruit, he can coach and he would bring some excitement back to the Barn. Also, he would be able to ignite some of the boosters to contribute to a new remodeled Williams and practice facility......

How much are you gonna throw in? Or just babble about it?

If Tubby can't win here, who can? Honestly. Where has Tubby failed?

One place. M-I-N-N-E-S-O-T-A. We have to figure out why that is. You're going to tell me it's age related, but I won't buy it. Tubby's teams have performed so badly that you know, even if he's just "coasting", his competitive fire is fully burning. He sounded really beaten on the radio after the Iowa game. He's giving it what he can.

I see this as an institutional problem in football and basketball. I have no idea what the fix is.

It's a very frustrating issue. No quick fix, no free agency to lean on. We are in for the long haul here. It's tough.

Tubby has a lot more name recognition that Flip outside of the area.

Definitely Tubby has more name recognition. Flip as next head coach soon...what a stupid post!!

If the national reputation is that MN is the Tampa Bay Rays of D1, then the program will continue to be challenged. For the Rays, they at least have equal recruitment opportunties called the MLB draft.

OK, so now we are comparing Gophers Basketball to a Major League Baseball Team. How profound.

I wouldn't even say he has that much name recognition. Lol. Other than the fact that ISU loves him.

Hilton Coliseum is not "newish" as suggested in a previous post. It opened in 1971. I like it better than poorly designed, aging Big Ten arenas of the same era (or a few years before) at Illinios, Michigan and Purdue, but it is old.

Iowa State has lot of challenges in being competign effectively in the top level of DI in BB and FB. Despite these challenges, their facilites are respectable if not new.

I don't understand the Flip love. He's hasn't recruited in decades and, to me, one of the primary Gophers problems in both the Tubby and Monson era is the lack of a coach on the staff that is a kick-ass recruiter.

In addition, over the past two seasons with the Wizards, he was barely better than Kurt Rambis. How is that the solution?

Flip has university Ties, can recruit players who want to be pro's, can energize the fan base, he is very IZZO like..he and Izzo are friends. too.
He will have great assistants and to be honest, this is NOT a good Job....the reputation of this University Athletic Department is not good.
We should be glad to have him......

Where is the evidence he can recruit?
