....as Mark Trestman has just won his second straight Grey Cup title.
I'm sure that will be the next "big tweet." :p

All current HC rumors/jokes aside, this is a great accomplishment for the former Gopher. Congrats to him and hopefully he is able to leverage this into a bigger HC role if that's his desire, or just continue to build a legacy North of the border.

Go Gophers!!

I second that as well. Congrats to Mark!!!!!

I hear it's his job if he wants it.....if he's not the next coach, it's because he said 'no'....of course this is only from one unverified and highly unreliable source, but I'm tossing it out there anyway.....

It's his job if he wants it, it's Hoke's job if he wants it, it's Golden's job if he wants it. Let's hope someone wants it!

I think that we will hire someone that has not been really visible on all of the message boards - isn't that the idea of hiring a search firm?

Anyone but Trestman ... except I don't want Sumlin ... but anyone else but ... wait, I don't want Hoke ... well, anyone other than ... well, no, Edsall won't do either...but otherwise anybody but... well, no one who has ever been in Iowa or Wisconsin, but other than that... wait, I don't want anyone who runs the spread... or the option... or whose last name I can't spell...

I guess I don't want any one, but I'm sure going to be disappointed with whoever they hire.

This.

You know, Maturi probably shouldn't have made the "Tubby Smith" hire comment we've all rehashed on here forever. The reality is that we should manage our expectations. This is a good job for an accomplished mid-major coach who is up-and-coming. The Tubby situation just doesn't come up all that often.

Here's my plan: When the new coach is announced, I'll renew my GLC membership and get behind the program.

I think Marc would do a better job here than people give him credit for. Plus I think this would be a place he would stay for awhile.

Thank goodness the Vikings never hired a coach based on his CFL success...

Maturi said something about a Tubby Smith type of hire???? Geez, why hasn't anyone brought that up before now?

As the list of other options dwindle, I'm beginning to think Marc Trestman should be reevaluated.

I think it'd be hilarious if Trestman got hired & won a Big Ten Title...I for one would eat crow for years to come...

In agreement

As the list of other options dwindle, I'm beginning to think Marc Trestman should be reevaluated.

He is a better candidate in my opinion than the guys we are supposedly mentioning as front runners.
I'd be happy with Trestman over Hoke, Calhoun and Edsall. That I know.

Trestman as head coach, Hohensee as offensive coordinator and Grant as defensive coordinator would be the ideal situation!

Tweet from Marcus Fuller:

"Trestman should get a serious interview with the U now that he won another Grey Cup tonight. I think the Gophers owe him at least that."

Go Gophers!!

I used to hate the thought of Trestman. Lately I've been warming up to the idea of him being the coach. It sure would be nice finding the diamond in the ruff and winning with an actual MN man. Now, there is definitely the chance he is awful, but if it does work out It'd be big. Still not my first choice, but I think I like him more than Sumlin right now.

Derp.

Pretty sure U doesn't owe him anything. Hopefully he was just tweeting it to get a rise out of us.

I actually agree with this, on the assumption a former player should always be interviewed whenever possible.

He has already said he is very happy where he is. But when dealing with people on this board, they don't believe anything they don't want to.

Is this case it is hard to believe, CFL is where careers go to die...unless a college or pro job comes along.

I still wonder what would be so terrible about giving him a chance, at least he seems to have a good handle on anything that wouldn't involve recruiting, which isn't going to improve until we start winning anyway. And with the list of sub-.500 current head coaches being floated, it's hardly that terrible of an idea...

I agree with the last poster. With the list of Mason type coaches floating around, why not take a chance on Marc? I know we took a chance on Brewster but Marc is head and shoulders above Brewster. Unless Maturi can pull a rabbit out of a hat and get a very successful head coach, then I'm willing to take a chance on Marc.

Look at the resume, not the name

I never gave that much thought to Trestman, but after looking at his resume', I am impressed.

It's a literal "Who's Who" of associations to players and coaches. I realize the CFL is not the NFL, but college ball isn't the NFL either.

Everybody seems to say the same thing.......brilliant football mind.

Considering he's only been a head coach three years and has won the last two championships , how could anyone not consider him a "get" for the U?

I've always thought he should be given at least an interview, but there are questions about his career? For example, one year he was the ass't head coach of the Dolphins and the next year was offensive coordinator at NC State. Sounds like a huge drop in position and salary, but it may be the HC got shot. Also in fairness the ass't coach jobs are subject to goofy swings of fortune not necessarily related to anything they did.

He certainly has some huge endorsements from some top notch football people. I sure like the sound of Trestman, Hohensee & Grant!
