They just played a very good game against a team that it would be hard to argue is not elite. Are the Gophers elite? I did not say that. However, I would have a difficult time saying that the Gophers have not punched through the ceiling that marks reaching relevancy.

In order to maintain this status, the Gophers must keep their heads; and that means hyper competitive play vs Nebraska and Wisconsin.

May be desirable or anyone who is convinced this Gophers team is a fraud.

Well I know this we are lucky to watch Cobb play he is elite and it's a pleasure to be able to watch him week to week

He is. It was good to see him thanking the OL one-by-one following the drives. Elite and a good teammate.

Not surprising, the OSU fans on their message board are giving us no credit.

"If we don't turn it over, we probably shut them out and win 50-0."

And if we don't turn it over, we maybe score 38.

All I know is Griese said he wouldn't be surprised to see a rematch of this game in B1G Title game and Urban said, "We just beat a very good football team."

I was surprised at the number of who left early in the 4th Q with the game still in doubt. I stayed until the very end like I usually do and despite the cold, just couldn't figure out why anyone would leave. It's too bad we couldn't have pulled out a miracle victory but glad our guys made it a game and played hard until the very end.

Let's go on the road and pick up another win or two.

Go Gophers!

I get the feeling sometimes that MN fans would rather brag about beating the traffic than their favorite team winning. It might have something to do with the cold but I've seen it many times when the weather was just fine.

My 75-year old grandfather is the perfect example of this. I hate going to sporting events with him because it could be nail biter at the end and he'd rather watch the game from the concourse next to the exit in order to get a little head start on the crowd. It's annoying. Completely agree there are others as well in Minnesota fanbases.

There is no shame in losing that game today. OSU is a good team. The Gophers could have folded up the tent after going down 14-0 but they fought back and made a game of it. I want to see them win as much as anybody but I'm not going to cry in my beer over losing that game today.

Our fan base is a disgrace. Hopefully it will turn a corner just like the team has. Minnesotans like winners.

Absolutely to not get blown out is an accomplishment, although we probably would've in the dome. Leidner is the weakest link followed by the pass protection, with a marginally better QB we win today. I'm hopeful the next two years will be open competitions at QB.

I was impressed with our mental toughness to hang in there and battle it out. We simply don't have the playmakers to hang with the elite's, and our seniors on defense didn't have great games. It was a good learning experience to see what a good quarterback can do to you. Hopefully next time we can prevent the big plays.

I feel good about going head to head with Nebraska next week. Let's win this freakin division. Leidner usually follows up his duds with some solid games, so let's hope he does it again.

Ran into an OSU fan at the job I'm on. He says to me yesterday in all seriousness, "Think you have a chance?". I so wanted to tell him to stick it. The job is in the Omaha/Council Bluffs area so I also have to listen to a Nebraska guy tell me how the Gophers haven't played anyone yet and how great the Cornhuskers are blah, blah, blah. (This was before their game today.) I really want the Gophers to punish them next week.

I don't foresee a lot of smack talk coming from the Huskers after their game today LOL

"Very good teams" don't go 7 for 20 for 85 yards, zero touchdowns, 2 interceptions and give-up 4 sacks. They've got a good team. Tough on Defense, very tough on scoring defense, good special teams and an above average rushing game considering how sporadically their passing game shows-up.

If that passing games shows-up for more than a quarter or two against NE and WI this will be a very good season. If it stays the way it was today and for 3 quarters vs. Illinois, they will end the season with a 4 game losing streak.

That will make it feel like a very bad season and a pretty mediocre squad. The Coaching Staff, Defense and Special Teams are good to above average. That Passing Game certainly isn't.

We lose some good seniors, no doubt - Cobb, Wilson, Botticelli, Goodger, in particular.

However, I like what we will have coming back at each of those spots - Rodney Smith/JJones/the other incoming freshmen, Williams, etc; small sample size, but Everett Williams played really well the 1st quarter against Iowa (needs to get bigger, stronger); Scott Ekpe will be back, and Richardson (although overmatched at times today), has been awesome (plus Elmore and Stelter), and then we've got lots of solid, blocking tight-ends.

In addition, all three WRs being red-shirted this year will be an insane boost to our receiving corp (athletically, size, speed, etc.).

All this said, whether we take a next step will be determined by QB play. It seems like the best we can hope for with Leidner right now is that he won't lose a game. He's proven he can lose a game. I think he's also shown he is not type of player that is ever going to win a game - as in, take a game over and carry the team the way Barrett did today. He's just not that guy right now, and I'm not sure his ceiling will ever be there.

I'm hoping Croft can be that difference-maker eventually. Geez, we need him to be.

"Very good teams" don't go 7 for 20 for 85 yards.........

Clearly you're wrong. The Gophers did and they are a very good team. Not elite, but very good. Your desire to bitch is overshadowing reality.... unless you just have no clue????

"Pretty mediocre" will never be "very bad" for the Gophers. Regardless of what happens the rest of the way, this is one of the best Gopher teams of the last 40 years, and we are in one of the best two year runs ever since our glory days. The last three games have been likely losses since the schedule came out.

Here's what was posted.

"That will make it
feel like a very bad season and a pretty mediocre squad."

That offended a couple of people huh? True, but the last three games of the season includes NE, WI and a bowl game. That will make it 4 losses in a row ending the season. That is what people will remember and that's what's killed the fan base for years. Even the no nothings may be able to figure out that people who don't already have Season Tickets will not be looking to buy them when they see the team lose 5 out of 6 of their last games and end-up 7-6.

They'll have beat the 3 cream puffs on Non-Conference Schedule and lost convincingly to TCU. They beat NW and Purdue, neither of which will end the season above .500, but they did their job and won. They beat a Michigan team but who cares how lousy Michigan was, they got the Jug back! That pumped everybody up. Then they didn't show-up in the 1st Half against Illinois and the Passing Game only showed-up for a Quarter, but they came back to HAMMER Iowa and add Floyd to the trophy case. They followed that with a close loss to tOSU. A loss that arguably came about because, again, the Defense, Special Teams and Running Game played very well, and the Passing Game was mediocre or worse.

The hope for a very good season is still there. The prospect of a good season is also there. But the prospect of a "very good season" even if they lose the next 3 games? We have people coming out to tell us that even if they lose the last 4 games of the season ending a run were they lose 5 out of 6 "Hey, 7-6 is the record of a very good team!"

That's satire right? I mean one even calls himself "Spoofin".

No, it's not but the usual suspects will be whining constantly next year about "lousy Marketing", "idiots over at the U" and "fair weather fans" if TCF isn't sold out for the Big Ten Season. Not for the whole year mind you, even the small-minded know that sellouts for Kent State and Ohio just ain't gonna happen.

Now as was ignored before "If that passing games shows-up for more than a quarter or two against NE and WI this will be a very good season."

If not how many of those same people will be here telling us about that "very good" 7-6 team?

Clearly you're wrong. The Gophers did and they are a very good team. Not elite, but very good. Your desire to bitch is overshadowing reality.... unless you just have no clue????

Already trying to prepare people for 3 more losses huh?

Joel Stave disagrees with all of this.

;)

Though he was probably aware of the 581 yards on the ground! Oh and hell, if the Gophers had thrown for 46 yards with a touchdown an zero interceptions? We may be celebrating a great victory rather than looking at a close loss.

I feel like this game illustrated that the program is firmly back in the Glen Mason era of Gopher Football. Still not quite ready for prime time but good enough to be competitive with almost everyone and a team that opponents can't view as an easy victory.

Now we just have to wait and see if this staff is able to find the players necessary to push the team to that next level that always seemed to elude Mason.

If the Gophers QB yesterday was "anybody but Leidner," OSU still wins that game. Look, I think the Gophers have improved, and at the very least played a credible game against a top-10 ranked team. But, in all honesty, I think some of the Gopher fans are putting the best possible spin on a game that could easily have been a much bigger win for OSU. If OSU recovers the fumble in the end zone after the Boddy-Calhoun hit on their WR, it is a much different game.

The Gophers are improved - but their talent level is not even close to an OSU type of team. When the other team's QB just flat outruns your starting DB's, that is pretty telling about the level of athleticism.

Yes, the Gophers made mistakes - but OSU made mistakes, too.

Having said that, I still think the Gophs have at least a shot to win 1 of the last 2 games, and an outside chance to win both games.

I am still looking for reasons to be optimistic - NOT for reasons to criticize.

Agree with a lot of what you said. A lot of us would be happy if we were just getting a mid level type performance out of our quarterback which seems to be a little tough to come by consistently. Regarding that catching the quarterback, he's an elite level athlete and if I'm not mistaken Murray is a top five ranked cornerback on one or more potential draft board so the kid is certainly going to play at the next level.

I'm very excited to watch this team progress over the next few years. Losing Cobb will hurt for awhile, but overall it seems like our talent will improve each year through 2016. Such a great change from just four years ago.

How would we know that? ;)

Isn't that the truth. Awful weekend for MN sports. Gopher basketball and football lose, hockey teams gets swept, the Vikings and Wolves lose. The only win among the major teams was the Wild.

Unfortunately we're kinda used to it by now.

Minnesota is getting better. And if it had played vs Illinois the way they played vs tOSU, they would either not have made or been overcome the errors on that game. Error free football wins vs tOSU, but the level errors made between tOSU and UM reflected the teams ability to overcome misques and blunders. The gap is closing, but tOSU retains an advantage.

I think the mental toughness is overlooked. We've seen this team fight back from deficits in the Kill era despite having an Offense not suited for coming back. 14-0 under any other coach would've turned into 49-10 or the like. Kill's players stay poised, composed & they also stay hyped. Any other Gopher team would've rolled over & died in that 1st Quarter yesterday. I completely understand what Kill meant about "Football Culture"... these kids BELIEVE regardless.
